Oil palm expansion among non-industrial producers in Cameroon: Potentials for synergy between agro-economic gains and ecological safeguards

Martin Paul Tabe-Ojong et al.

Summary: This study examines the drivers of oil palm production among non-industrial producers in the humid rainforest zone of Cameroon. Various socio-economic and institutional factors have different relationships with the likelihood of cultivating oil palm and the area under oil palm cultivation, including expected profitability, market orientation, land tenure security, and access to improved farm inputs. The results indicate that oil palm cultivation is prevalent among all farm groups, especially in large farms, with factors such as transaction costs and labor availability also influencing production.

Do Remittances Promote Fertilizer Use? The Case of Ugandan FarmersJEL codes

Stefanija Veljanoska

Summary: This study investigates the potential of remittances in promoting fertilizer use among Ugandan farmers, finding that remittances promote organic fertilizer use and act as a buffer for the risks and costs associated with inorganic fertilizer. By inducing farmers to invest in livestock and providing a buffer to rainfall variability, remittances can partially remove credit and insurance constraints and promote fertilizer adoption in Uganda.

Selling Together: The Benefits of Cooperatives to Women Honey Producers in Ethiopia

Renata Serra et al.

Summary: Smallholder farmers in developing countries face barriers to accessing inputs and technology, with women farmers experiencing additional constraints due to gender norms. While collective action has shown to improve market access and economic outcomes for farmers, limited evidence exists on the effects for women smallholders. Empirical investigation in Ethiopia's honey sector reveals that cooperative membership significantly increases market price and production quantity for women farmers, with notable variations in product marketing share. Membership in self-help groups or farmer associations further enhances positive outcomes of belonging to a formal cooperative, with qualitative findings supporting improvements in agency and self-esteem among women members.

Production, consumption and market diversification of grain legumes in the humid forest agroecology of cameroon

Martin Paul Tabe-Ojong et al.

Summary: Grain legumes are important for food and income security in the humid forest zone of Cameroon, with female-headed households being more involved in their production and marketing. Evidence-based policy directives recommend targeting women into farming systems by providing improved seeds and farmland, as well as enhancing informal education to increase indigenous knowledge in legume production, consumption, and marketing.

Adoption of organic soil amendments and its impact on farm performance: evidence from wheat farmers in China*

Hongyun Zheng et al.

Summary: The study found that household size, dependency ratio, machine ownership, and non-paid labor are the main factors influencing farmers' adoption of organic soil amendments (OSAs), and that the adoption of OSAs has a positive and significant impact on wheat yields and net returns. Large-scale households tend to achieve higher wheat yields and net returns compared to small-scale households.
