Energy expenditure and physical activity in COPD by doubly labelled water method and an accelerometer

Hideaki Sato et al.

Summary: This study evaluated total energy expenditure (TEE) and physical activity level (PAL) in COPD patients using the DLW method and accelerometer. The results showed good correlation between TEE measured by DLW and accelerometer, but the accelerometer underestimated TEE and PAL with proportional biases. Systematic errors and relevant clinical factors need to be considered when estimating TEE and PAL in COPD patients using an accelerometer.

The product of trunk muscle area and density on the CT image is a good indicator of energy expenditure in patients with or at risk for COPD

Toru Shirahata et al.

Summary: The study found significant associations between trunk muscle measurements and energy expenditure parameters, physical activity level, and body composition indices in patients with or at risk for COPD. CT-derived measurements for trunk muscles are helpful in evaluating physical status and function, particularly serving as a useful marker reflecting TEE and PAL.
