A high-resolution trajectory data driven method for real-time evaluation of traffic safety

Yuping Hu et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a method for real-time evaluation of road safety based on high-resolution trajectory data, which combines traffic states and conflicts to explore the internal relationship. Machine learning methods are applied for real-time evaluation. The results show that the proposed method can accurately estimate conflict risk, contributing to the improvement of real-time traffic safety and safety management.

Using empirical traffic trajectory data for crash risk evaluation under three-phase traffic theory framework

Tong Liu et al.

Summary: This study evaluated crash risks in different traffic phases based on surrogate safety measures and vehicle trajectory data. Synchronized flow and wide moving jam were identified as the most dangerous phases, while high density and low speed were associated with high crash risk. The best crash risk prediction performance was achieved by integrating traffic phases and parameters.

Exploring transition durations of rear-end collisions based on vehicle trajectory data: A survival modeling approach

Ye Li et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel approach in rear-end collision risk analysis based on transition durations, defined three important transition durations, and developed random-parameters AFT survival models to examine their rationalities for evaluating rear-end collision risks. The results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms TTC and its variants in evaluating rear-end collision risks by providing both time point information and variation of time-series data.

Modeling accident risks in different lane-changing behavioral patterns

Qinghong Chen et al.

Summary: Lane-changing is a complex task with a high probability of accidents. This study investigates the contributing factors to accident risks in different lane-changing patterns, taking unobserved heterogeneity into account. The research shows that the risk level of vehicle groups is strongly associated with gap distance, vehicle velocity, acceleration, lane-changing direction, and duration. Different patterns have different contributing variables and effects.

Integrating safety into the fundamental relations of freeway traffic flows: A conflict-based safety assessment framework

Saeed Mohammadian et al.

Summary: A flexible conflict-based framework is proposed in this study to extract safety information from freeway macroscopic traffic state variables by utilizing the information from all underlying car-following interactions. The proportion of stopping distance is shown to be more desirable than several event-based conflict measures for describing time spent in conflict based on macroscopic state variables. This hybrid methodological framework combines probabilistic and machine learning models to develop relationships between safety and macroscopic state variables within a flexible conflict-based safety assessment framework.

A bivariate extreme value model for estimating crash frequency by severity using traffic conflicts

Ashutosh Arun et al.

Summary: Estimating crash frequency by severity levels using traffic conflicts is relatively unexplored, but this study fills the gap by jointly modeling crash frequency indicators and crash severity indicators with bivariate Extreme Value method, demonstrating superior statistical fit and precise estimations. The study reveals that the bivariate approach is more advantageous than the univariate approach, and combining TTC and MTTC indicators with Delta-V provides comparable results in predicting crash frequencies by severity levels. Sharing information between similar traffic sites improves the accuracy and precision of prediction.
