Positive psychology constructs and Extramural English as predictors of primary school students' willingness to communicate

Ju Seong Lee et al.

Summary: This study investigates the prediction of positive psychology constructs (classroom enjoyment, grit, and growth mindset) and Extramural English on primary school students' willingness to communicate in a second language (L2 WTC). The findings suggest that classroom enjoyment, grit, and Extramural English predict L2 WTC in the classroom, while grit, growth mindset, and Extramural English predict L2 WTC outside of the classroom. The study also highlights the importance of intervention programs that integrate grit and Extramural English in improving students' L2 WTC.

Ruofei Zhang et al.

Summary: Empirical research on extramural language learning has been expanding since 2009, but there is a lack of comprehensive review studies. This study reviewed 33 relevant articles to provide an overview of the field, identifying key target languages and extramural learning activities. People's engagement in extramural language learning, especially listening to audios and playing digital games, was found to be high, with effectiveness influenced by various factors such as difficulty of activities, proficiency levels, and interactive environment. Suggestions for practitioners include encouraging digital gameplay, emphasizing formal instruction, and creating positive interactive environments.
