Digital multimodal composing in post-secondary L2 settings: a review of the empirical landscape

Meixiu Zhang et al.

Summary: Driven by the digital revolution, digital multimodal composing (DMC) has gained significant attention in second language (L2) classrooms in the past decade. This paper provides a comprehensive review of 60 empirical L2 studies on DMC in tertiary settings, highlighting the research landscape and methodological characteristics. The findings suggest that DMC receives great attention in language classes, but there is an underrepresentation of non-English classrooms. Furthermore, video projects are preferred over visual projects, and there is a significant focus on exploring the potential of DMC from learners' perspectives. The field relies on analytic frameworks distinct from traditional L2 writing and demonstrates both strengths and weaknesses in methodological practices.

Exploring the impact of wiki-mediated collaborative writing on EFL students' writing performance, writing self-regulation, and writing self-efficacy: a mixed methods study

Masoud Rahimi et al.

Summary: This study explores the impact of wiki-mediated collaborative writing on EFL students' writing performance, writing self-regulation, and writing self-efficacy, following a Vygotskian social-constructivist theory of learning. The results show that both wiki-mediated and non-wiki collaborative writing instructions improved EFL students' writing abilities, with students in the wiki-mediated group outperforming those in the non-wiki group. Positive attitudes and perceptions towards wiki-mediated collaborative writing were also reported.

Examining the Simultaneous Effects of L1 Writing, L2 Reading, L2 Proficiency, and Affective Factors on Different Task Types of L2 Writing

Kyung Ja Kim et al.

Summary: The study examined the complex relationships between factors influencing L2 writing in tasks of different cognitive demands. Results showed that different factors played a role in successful performance in more and less cognitively demanding literacy tasks. For less demanding tasks, L1 narrative writing skill, L2 proficiency, and L2 writing anxiety directly impacted L2 narrative writing, while L2 motivation had an indirect impact through L2 proficiency. In more demanding tasks, L1 argumentative writing, L2 inferential reading, L2 proficiency, and L2 writing anxiety had direct associations with L2 argumentative writing, and L2 motivation had an indirect impact through L2 proficiency and L2 inferential reading skill.
