Transnational marriage migration and the negotiation of precarious pathways beyond partial citizenship in Singapore

Brenda S. A. Yeoh et al.

Summary: In Asia, pathways to citizenship for marriage migrants are often precarious due to negotiations around gender, ethnicity, nationality, and class. The family sphere serves as a strategic site where citizenship categories impact migrant lives and claims are mediated, negotiated, and contested. Marriage migrants navigate the paradox of being responsible family members while also being partial citizens of the nation-state under hierarchical control.

When men migrate for marriage: negotiating partnerships and gender roles in cross-border marriages between rural Kosovo and the EU

Carolin Leutloff-Grandits

Summary: This article examines cross-border marriages in Western hegemonic discourses, focusing on the marriages of rural Kosovo men who moved to Austria or Germany because they married women from a "Kosovan" background. The gender roles negotiated in these marriages challenge the dominant Western image of patriarchal ethnic-minority men. Male marriage migrants find themselves in multiple dependencies post-migration, facing potential marginalization from both the majority society and within their own ethnic communities. Education and successful integration into the labor market can also lead to male migrants setting up intra-ethnic boundaries.
