Investor Attention and Stock Returns

Jian Chen et al.

Summary: This article proposes an investor attention index based on proxies in the literature and demonstrates its significant predictive power in forecasting the stock market risk premium. The index, extracted using partial least squares or scaled principal component analysis, can deliver substantial economic gains for mean-variance investors in asset allocation. The predictive power of the index primarily arises from the reversal of temporary price pressure and the stronger forecasting ability for high-variance stocks.

Measuring Geopolitical Risk

Dario Caldara et al.

Summary: This paper presents a news-based measure of adverse geopolitical events and their risks. The geopolitical risk index is particularly high during significant historical events such as world wars, the Korean War, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and after 9/11. Higher geopolitical risk leads to lower investment and employment, as well as increased probability of disasters and larger downside risks. This risk is driven by both the threat and occurrence of adverse geopolitical events. Industry- and firm-level indicators also show that investment declines more in industries exposed to geopolitical risk, and higher firm-level geopolitical risk is associated with lower investment.

Macroeconomic attention and stock market return predictability

Feng Ma et al.

Summary: This investigation examines the predictive ability of macroeconomic attention indices (MAI) in forecasting stock market returns. The results show that MAI indices have a significant degree of accuracy in predicting stock market returns. In addition, the components of MAI indices based on partial least squares (PLS) and the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) methods outperform traditional macroeconomic variables in improving the accuracy of stock market return predictions. Furthermore, shrinkage methods demonstrate superior performance compared to other models in forecasting stock market returns. The study also highlights the superior predictive ability of macroeconomic attention indices during the COVID-19 pandemic and over longer periods of time.

Ivan Diaz-Rainey et al.

Summary: The study found that the Paris Agreement had a significant impact on the oil and gas industry, particularly affecting companies with a focus on the U.S. market. Trade policy uncertainty and stock returns

Marcelo Bianconi et al.

Summary: Recent literature has shown that trade policy uncertainty has significant real effects on trade, employment, and investment, with little evidence that investors are compensated for bearing this risk. By analyzing quasi-experimental variation in exposure to TPU from Congressional votes, researchers found that a long-short portfolio designed to isolate TPU exposure can earn a risk-adjusted return of 3.6-6.2% per year. The effect is more pronounced in sectors less protected from globalization and more reliant on inputs from China.

Climate Change and Long-Run Discount Rates: Evidence from Real Estate

Stefano Giglio et al.

Summary: The study shows that housing markets can provide valuable information about appropriate discount rates for investments in climate change abatement. While the term structure of discount rates for real estate is downward sloping, it is upward sloping for climate-hedging investments, with an upper limit set by the risk-free rate. Housing discount rates can serve as an upper bound for valuing investments in the absence of risk-free rates.

Geopolitical risk, economic policy uncertainty and asset returns in Chinese financial markets

Thomas C. Chiang

Summary: This study investigates the impact of changes in economic policy uncertainty and geopolitical risk on stock, bond, and gold returns in the Chinese market. Findings show that stock-bond return correlations are negatively related to economic policy uncertainty, while stock-gold return correlations are positively related to the absolute value of changes in geopolitical risk. The study suggests that gold serves as a safe haven hedge against policy uncertainty and geopolitical risk in the Chinese financial markets, with potential implications for other emerging markets as well.

Monetary policy uncertainty in China

Hongyi Chen et al.

Summary: The study introduces a new measure of uncertainty regarding the monetary policy of the People's Bank of China, extracted from international newspapers. Uncertainty in Chinese monetary policy has significant impacts on economic activity in mainland China and spillover effects on other Asian economies, leading to a decrease in asset prices and GDP. Increased reporting on uncertainty in international newspapers results in a decline in stock prices across the region.
