Analysis of artisanal and small-scale gold mining accidents and fatalities in Ghana

Summary: Despite the economic benefits of artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) in sub-Saharan Africa, it also poses challenges to the health and safety of miners due to its inherent risk nature. The study reveals the high consequence nature of ASM accidents and suggests the need for targeted interventions to improve safety performance in Ghana's ASM sector. The average annual fatality rate of ASM far exceeds that of the large-scale mining sector in Ghana, highlighting the urgent need for improved safety conditions at ASM sites.

Summary: This paper explores the impact of competing interests over land resources between farmers and herders on indigenous farmer's agricultural investment decisions. Findings suggest that land owners exploit gaps in customary land administration systems to allocate lands to pastoralists in exchange for money, while neglecting indigenous farmers' land use rights. Despite concerns over tenure insecurity, farmer's agricultural investment decisions remain unchanged as changes may reduce incomes and compromise their livelihoods.
