Carbon emissions, inequalities and economic freedom: an empirical investigation in selected South Asian economies

Summary: The purpose of this study is to analyze and empirically test the impact of Economic Freedom (EF) and inequality on environmental pollutants, as well as the relationship between economic growth and per capita emissions. The findings suggest that there is weak evidence for the existence of the Kuznets curve, and that increasing EF (by reducing government size) can help to contain carbon emissions. Additionally, there is a negative relationship between democracy and environmental quality, and income inequality is positively correlated with emissions in the middle range of Gini. This study is important for achieving sustainable green growth with equity.
