Prioritising Sustainable Development Goals, characterising interactions, and identifying solutions for local sustainability

Reihaneh Bandari et al.

Summary: The United Nations 2030 Agenda takes a holistic and multi-sectoral view on sustainability through the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the successful implementation of this agenda depends on understanding the synergies and trade-offs among SDGs. A case study in the Goulburn-Murray region in Victoria, Australia identified clean water and sanitation, agricultural activities, economic growth, climate action, and life on land as the top five priority SDGs for the region, highlighting potential trade-offs between unsustainable agricultural practices and water resources, the environment, and sustainable economic growth. Ongoing uncertainties like climate change, policies on environmental water recovery, international markets, and emerging technologies could pose risks for the future of agriculture and the economy.

Exploring mechanisms for systemic thinking in decision-making through three country applications of SDG Synergies

Karina Barquet et al.

Summary: This study examines how to enhance the system thinking capacity among decision-makers and implementing agencies to promote the practice of Sustainable Development Goals. Key challenges identified include localizing SDGs, stakeholders' reluctance to acknowledge trade-offs, addressing transformational change, and balancing flexibility with scientific robustness in the approach.

Lessons learnt from previous local sustainability efforts to inform local action for the Sustainable Development Goals

Dianty Ningrum et al.

Summary: Local communities play a crucial role in global sustainability efforts and their actions can have significant impacts on social and environmental systems. However, our understanding of the factors enabling and constraining local action is limited. This paper synthesizes lessons learned from the Local Agenda 21 (LA21) to inform local action for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through a systematic review of 87 empirical cases, the study identifies reliable resources, supportive planning and policymaking practice, competent local actors, and trust between them as the most frequent enablers of local sustainability processes in the context of LA21.

A review of the state-of-the-art for stakeholder analysis with regard to environmental management and regulation

Elise Broe Bendtsen et al.

Summary: Stakeholder analysis is widely used in environmental management and regulation, covering a broad spectrum of issues. Common data collection methods include snowball-sampling, interviews, and literature reviews. While most studies focus on interests and influence, there is a lack of clear definitions for key terms and some studies lack self-reflection and evaluation.

Sustainable value mapping and analysis methodology: Enabling stakeholder participation to develop localized indicators mapped to broader sustainable development goals

K. Winans et al.

Summary: The increasing need for sustainability and social responsibility investments, along with the limited efficacy of current tools in establishing local sustainability priorities, highlights the critical importance of designing decision-making support tools that are context-specific. This paper introduces the sustainable value mapping and analysis (SVMA) methodology and demonstrates its effectiveness in assessing social, environmental, and economic priorities within supply chain operations, offering opportunities to evaluate sustainability performance and outcomes against broader sustainable development goals.

Seeking sustainable development policies at the municipal level based on the triad of city, economy and environment: evidence from Hunan province, China

Zongwei Han et al.

Summary: The study examined the relationships between urbanization, economic development, and ecological environment quality in cities in Hunan province over the past decade using the Environmental Kuznets Curve theory. It found that urban expansion had a high positive impact on economic development, particularly at high urbanization levels, but also had significant negative effects on ecological environment quality. The overall trend showed a slow improvement in environmental quality in cities at both low and high levels of urban expansion.

Modeling interlinkages between sustainable development goals using network analysis

Ranjula Bali Swain et al.

Summary: The UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are universal, ambitious, and complex, comprising economic, social, and environmental indicators that are interconnected. Analysis reveals both positive and negative interlinkages between SDG targets, with synergies outweighing trade-offs. It is suggested that identifying specific communities of SDG targets for different regions may be a more effective approach to prioritize certain goals.
