Offshore wind farms and the attraction-production hypothesis: insights from a combination of stomach content and stable isotope analyses

Ninon Mavraki et al.

Summary: This study looks at the feeding ecology of different fish species at artificial reefs like OWFs, finding that benthopelagic and benthic species utilize artificial reefs for feeding over a prolonged period, while pelagic species only occasionally use them as a source of abundant resources.

Seabird diet analysis suggests sudden shift in the pelagic communities of the subtropical Northeast Atlantic

Joana Romero et al.

Summary: This study focused on the dynamics of subtropical pelagic ecosystems in the Northeast Atlantic, using Cory's shearwaters as indicators of temporal variability. Through analysis of foraging trips and regurgitations of the seabirds nesting in the Selvagens islands, researchers found marked changes in the composition of pelagic fish communities, with peaks in abundance observed for certain species in 2016 and 2017-2018. The study also explored potential explanatory variables such as fisheries data, oceanographic variables, and the North Atlantic Oscillation, but the causes of these marked shifts in pelagic fish availability remain largely unknown.

Strategic Environmental Assessment and the precautionary principle in the spatial planning of wind farms - European experience in Serbia

Bosko Josimovic et al.

Summary: Spatial determination planning for wind farms is a crucial and sensitive stage in development, balancing wind potential and environmental protection. Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) plays a key role in finding optimal solutions and avoiding problems in later stages. Applying SEA in the early planning stages is important to formally apply the precautionary principle and prevent disadvantageous issues during project implementation.

Summary: The study evaluates the main aspects of the legal framework for MRE and proposes corrective measures for further development of the sector. Adoption of marine planning policies, streamlining licensing procedures, and the implementation of MRE sectoral plans are essential for the growth of a fully-fledged MRE industry.

Introducing offshore wind energy in the sea space: Canary Islands case study developed under Maritime Spatial Planning principles

A. Abramic et al.

Summary: This study introduces a novel methodological approach for introducing Offshore Wind Energy (OWE) facilities into sea space, determining suitable locations based on oceanographic potential, environmental sensibility, marine conservation restrictions, land-sea interactions, and avoidance of conflict with current maritime and coastal activities. The methodology was tested along the coastline of the Canary Islands and identified marine areas with significant wind&depth potential, minimal environmental impact, compatibility with marine conservation, and avoidance of conflict with economic maritime and coastal sectors. The research highlights the need for balance among the five clusters for OWE development, reflecting on Ecosystem-Based Management components that should be mirrored in the Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP) strategy.

Summary: Preliminary studies in Spanish waters show significant potential for renewable energy, but the current implementation of blue energy is nearly non-existent due to various factors. Like other EU member states, Spain is developing maritime spatial planning to address barriers and promote the deployment of marine renewable energies.
