The Henseler-Ogasawara Specification of Composites in Structural Equation Modeling: A Tutorial

Florian Schuberth

Summary: Structural equation modeling (SEM) is a versatile statistical method that can emulate other methods based on the general linear model. However, there are challenges in incorporating composites into SEM models. This tutorial article presents a specification for SEM to incorporate composites in structural models, drawing from the idea proposed in canonical correlation analysis. The advantage of this approach is that it allows for the utilization of existing developments in SEM and the handling of missing values.

Assessing the overall fit of composite models estimated by partial least squares path modeling

Florian Schuberth et al.

Summary: This study examines the role of overall model fit assessment in the context of PLS-PM, discussing when and how to assess the fit of PLS path models. It provides guidelines for assessing the overall fit of composite models and resolves concerns raised in the literature on PLS-PM.

Partial least squares as a tool for scientific inquiry: comments on Cadogan and Lee

Jorg Henseler et al.

Summary: This paper critically evaluates the claims of Cadogan and Lee (2022) regarding the suitability of PLS for scientific studies. It argues that it is not PLS itself that subverts the realist search for truth, but some proponents of the PLS-SEM framework. The paper provides recommendations for researchers using structural equation models, emphasizing the importance of being conscious of different research paradigms, selecting appropriate statistical models, and critically evaluating models.

A comparative evaluation of factor- and component-based structural equation modelling approaches under (in)correct construct representations

Gyeongcheol Cho et al.

Summary: Structural equation modelling (SEM) has two domains, factor-based and component-based, each with their own population models. Component-based approaches are generally more robust to construct misrepresentation and should be preferred over factor-based approaches for component models. Among component-based approaches, GSCA is recommended over PLSPM regardless of construct misrepresentation.

A clarification of confirmatory composite analysis (CCA)

Geoffrey S. Hubona et al.

Summary: Confirmatory composite analysis (CCA) is a technique within structural equation modeling (SEM) used to assess composite models, with the original CCA being distinct from recent methods proposed by Hair et al. (2020) for confirming measurement quality in PLS-SEM; To avoid confusion, researchers suggest using different terminology to differentiate between the two methods.

Summary: This paper introduces two types of theoretical concepts in information systems research: behavioral concepts and forged concepts, emphasizing the use of composite-based structural equation modeling to analyze models containing emergent variables. The paper proposes the steps of this method: model specification, model identification, model estimation, and model assessment, demonstrating how modeling with emergent variables proceeds through an illustrative example.

Confirmatory composite analysis using partial least squares: setting the record straight

Summary: Confirmatory composite analysis (CCA) assesses composite models, while MCMQ confirms the measurement quality in partial least squares structural equation modeling. CCA is recommended for evaluating composite models, while structural equation modeling is suggested for reflective and causal-formative measurement models assessment.
