Validation of Self-Reported Smartphone Usage Against Objectively-Measured Smartphone Usage in Hong Kong Chinese Adolescents and Young Adults

Paul H. Lee et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the validity of self-reported smartphone usage data against objectively-measured smartphone usage data by directly tracking the activities in the participants' smartphone among Chinese adolescents and young adults in Hong Kong. The results showed large discrepancies between self-reported smartphone and objectively-measured smartphone usage except for self-reported usage on game apps. In three out of the four usage domains, self-reported time and objectively-measured time showed positive and significant correlation, highlighting potential differences in reporting habits across different usage categories.

Summary: The study developed and evaluated the psychometric properties of the Smartphone Distraction Scale (SDS), finding that distraction plays a significant role in problematic smartphone use, being associated with deficient self-regulation and problematic social media use. The assessment of distraction in relation to problematic use may facilitate interventions and support vulnerable populations in an increasingly disrupted work and social environment.

Summary: This study introduces a new methodological approach called mobile data donations for collecting and analyzing smartphone usage data.
