Does Immigration Produce a Public Backlash or Public Acceptance? Time-Series, Cross-Sectional Evidence from Thirty European Democracies

Christopher Claassen et al.

Summary: This study finds that there is a public backlash against high levels of immigration in the short to medium run, resulting in negative mood and increased concern about immigration. However, over a longer period of time, there is evidence of habituation to immigration which cancels out the initial backlash effect within one to three decades.

Polarization Between the Rich and the Poor? The Dynamics and Structure of Redistributive Preferences in a Comparative Perspective

Xavier Romero-Vidal et al.

Summary: This study addresses the empirical challenge of scarcity of comparative data on citizens' support for redistribution by creating a novel time-series cross-sectional dataset in seven European countries over three decades. The analysis shows that there is no systematic trend of increasing reluctance or support for redistribution among citizens, and there is no polarization between the preferences of the rich and the poor. Both the demand for redistribution and the preference gap between the rich and the poor evolve cyclically.
