The sharing economy in tourism and property markets: a comment on the darker side of conceptual stretching

Tim Coles

Summary: Research on Airbnb and the sharing economy in relation to accommodation has shown that focus on conceptual stretching has led to neglect of the role of property, property markets, and property ownership in creating value from offering accommodation. It is argued that a reevaluation of these factors, particularly in the context of the UK, is necessary to fully understand the impacts of this form of transaction.

Is there an urban-rural divide in the demand for peer-to-peer accommodation sharing?

Renuka Mahadevan

Summary: This research explores the regional dimension of peer-to-peer accommodation (P2PA) in urban and rural areas. Based on a survey of Australian residents' use of P2PA, the study finds that economic benefits and local experiences are not significant motivations in urban areas, unlike in rural areas. Furthermore, locational advantages act as deterrents in urban areas and even more so in rural areas. The study also finds that social experiences, home benefits, and the shared economy philosophy have no impact on the demand for P2PA. These findings provide valuable insights for P2PA hosts to tailor their marketing strategies in different regions and for traditional accommodation providers to develop strategies to attract customers away from P2PA.
