Hydropower benefit-sharing and resettlement: A conceptual review

Christopher Schulz et al.

Summary: Global hydropower developers are increasingly expected to share benefits with people living in project-affected areas, but the concept of benefit-sharing is not widely understood or applied. This paper clarifies the differences between benefit-sharing, compensation, and related concepts, and emphasizes the importance of making a positive long-term development impact beyond simply replacing lost assets. Effective benefit-sharing requires capacity building and participatory processes with project-affected people to transfer resources and services, ultimately leading to governance challenges that can be addressed through appropriate institutional set-ups tailored to the capacity of governments in the dam-hosting location.

Are big and small solar separate things?: The importance of scale in public support for solar energy development in upstate New York

Roberta S. Nilson et al.

Summary: The study highlights that the growth of solar energy capacity in the U.S. is mainly driven by large utility-scale projects, but public support varies for projects of different scales. Residents in Western New York are more opposed to large-scale solar projects, viewing them as industrial activities that could negatively impact rural landscapes.

PV park site selection for utility-scale solar guides combining GIS and power flow analysis: A case study on a Swedish municipality

O. Lindberg et al.

Summary: This study investigates how to plan utility-scale solar photovoltaic parks in a rural municipality in Sweden by considering land suitability and grid hosting capacity. The results show that only a small percentage of the area is suitable for PV parks, and the distance to the nearest substation is an important limiting factor.

Conceptual framework for balancing society and nature in net-zero energy transitions

Gemma Delafield et al.

Summary: Transitioning to a low carbon energy future is crucial to meeting the goals of the Paris Agreement and Sustainable Development Goals. The Energy Scenario Evaluation framework presented in this paper emphasizes the need to assess the impact of energy scenarios on society and the natural environment, highlighting the interconnectedness of energy transitions with human development and the importance of designing energy scenarios that align with other policy priorities.

Designing solar farms for synergistic commercial and conservation outcomes

Eric J. Nordberg et al.

Summary: Competition for land use is making it harder to set aside space for wildlife and nature conservation, highlighting the need to identify opportunities that can achieve both commercial and conservation goals. The renewable energy industry offers such opportunities, where solar farms can be designed to improve biodiversity, land condition, and conservation outcomes while maintaining or increasing financial returns. Further research is needed to fully understand the potential ways to achieve the best commercial and conservation outcomes through solar farm designs in agricultural landscapes.

Partial shading by solar panels delays bloom, increases floral abundance during the late-season for pollinators in a dryland, agrivoltaic ecosystem

Maggie Graham et al.

Summary: The study found that the number of flowers increased and the blooming time was delayed in partial shade plots under solar arrays, potentially benefiting late-season foragers in water-limited ecosystems. Pollinator abundance, diversity, and richness were higher in partial shade plots under solar arrays than in full shade plots, similar to those in full sun plots.

How landscape-technology fit affects public evaluations of renewable energy infrastructure scenarios. A hybrid choice model

B. Salak et al.

Summary: In response to climate change, many countries are realigning their energy systems towards sustainability, including the development of renewable energy infrastructure such as wind and photovoltaic. This study evaluates the role of landscape-technology fit and latent meanings in decision-making processes, with prior experience (exposure) playing a significant role. Results indicate that landscape-technology fit acts as a moderator between choice attributes and preferences, influenced by landscape and renewable energy meanings, which are in turn influenced by relevant prior experience (exposure).
