Critically exploring the future of gaseous energy carriers

Dolf Gielen et al.

Summary: This article discusses the impact of natural gas on climate change mitigation, as well as the role of green gas in future energy mix. The analysis suggests that pipeline infrastructure may play an important role in the transition, provided costs are reduced further. In addition, green and blue hydrogen, as well as biomethane are also explored in this context.

Expert Views on the Future Development of Biogas Business Branch in Germany, The Netherlands, and Finland until 2030

Erika Winquist et al.

Summary: To meet the European Union's energy and climate targets for 2030, member states need to reconsider their energy production and usage, with biogas potentially playing a more significant role as a renewable energy source. Research on the future of the biogas industry in three case study countries showed both similarities and differences among experts' views, reflecting current policies. The role of biogas is seen as not only providing renewable energy but also reducing emissions from agriculture and promoting circular economy practices.

Scenarios for the integration of renewable gases into the German natural gas market - A simulation-based optimisation approach

Sebastian Kolb et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the role of natural gas in Germany's energy system and the challenges in transitioning to renewable gases. The MIREG model is introduced to simulate different scenarios and explore the effects of market conditions and funding strategies on the share of renewable gases in the German gas mix until 2050. Importing renewable gas from locations with high potential of renewable energy or biomass could be a solution for meeting significant amounts of German gas consumption with renewable gases.

Ready for new business models? Human and social capital in the management of renewable energy cooperatives in Germany

Carsten Herbes et al.

Summary: Policy makers in various countries prioritize the development of community energy, particularly in the form of renewable energy cooperatives (RECs). However, research shows that weaknesses in qualifications of REC management teams, especially in sales and marketing skills, hinder the further development of RECs. Partnerships with other RECs and organizations, as well as training programs for management team members, could help address these challenges and support REC growth.

Policy frameworks and voluntary markets for biomethane - How do different policies influence providers' product strategies?

Carsten Herbes et al.

Summary: Study finds that policies in the UK, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland prioritize using biomethane for electricity generation and transport, with little regulation in the heating market. Policymakers are advised to harmonize support schemes, waive mandatory requirements, and target existing buildings to channel more biomethane into residential heating.

'The problem-centred expert interview'. Combining qualitative interviewing approaches for investigating implicit expert knowledge

Stefanie Doeringer

Summary: Expert interviews are commonly used to gather information on a specific field, but this paper introduces the 'problem-centred expert interview' as a method to delve deeper into individual perspectives that impact social practices. By combining theory-generating expert interviews and problem-centred interviews, researchers can effectively reveal implicit expert knowledge and understand the inner logic of decision-making processes.
