Surface engineering of MOF-derived FeCo/NC core-shell nanostructures to enhance alkaline water-splitting

Syed Shoaib Ahmad Shah et al.

Summary: This manuscript describes the synthesis of composite mixture by engineering the N-doped carbon layer on the surface of FeCo-doped MOF at the nanoscale level, resulting in excellent performance in alkaline water splitting. The addition of N-doped carbon contributes to larger and more robust carbon shells, leading to greater electrolyte-accessible surface and enriched mass diffusion paths, ultimately achieving higher performance and stable durability. The strategy of optimizing the active sites of FeCo-based electrocatalyst towards alkaline water splitting is demonstrated to be fruitful.

Summary: The study focuses on the development of advanced materials for next-generation energy devices, specifically through the use of surface-induced metal organic frameworks (MOFs) on layered double hydroxide (LDH) followed by controlled pyrolysis to generate various structural morphologies. Among these materials, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) anchored Co-O-x are proposed as advantageous materials for next generation electrochemical devices like Li-ion batteries. These materials exhibit higher surface area and porosity inherited from MOFs, with improved ion transport during charging/discharging and minimized volumetric fluctuations.
