Data-enhanced dynamic flight simulations for flight performance analysis

Dajung Kim et al.

Summary: In this research, a data-enhanced methodology is developed to simulate the dynamic flight of aircraft and accurately estimate performance parameters. The relevant flight phases and constraints are determined using supervised machine learning. The results show the effectiveness of the methodology in accurately estimating flight performance parameters, which is significant for airlines and aircraft design.

The impact of migration background, ethnicity and social network dispersion on air and car travel in the UK

Giulio Mattioli et al.

Summary: The study finds that individuals with first-generation migration background tend to have lower car mileage but higher levels of air travel. Conversely, this effect is less pronounced or absent for more recent migrants and second- or third-generation migrants. Additionally, spatially dispersed social networks are positively associated with both air and car travel, and the relationship between migration background and air travel can be partly explained by social network dispersion.

How socially just are taxes on air travel and 'frequent flyer levies'?

Milena Buchs et al.

Summary: Research shows that taxing air travel is distributionally neutral or progressive, with the most progressive option being a 'frequent air miles tax' based on both the number of flights and emissions. Some social groups, such as recent migrants, are relatively likely to be 'frequent flyers' even on lower incomes.

The contribution of global aviation to anthropogenic climate forcing for 2000 to 2018

D. S. Lee et al.

Summary: Global aviation operations contribute to anthropogenic climate change by emitting carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, water vapor, soot and sulfate aerosols, and increasing cloudiness due to contrail formation. The growth of aviation activity and climate change impact has shown a marked increase in recent years, with contrail cirrus being the largest contributor to the warming effect.

Transition policies for climatically sustainable aviation

Stefan Gossling et al.

Summary: This paper reviews potential aviation emissions mitigation policies, emphasizing the importance of eliminating fossil fuel subsidies, and discusses the feasibility of promoting emission reduction through levies and sustainable aviation fuels. Additionally, the paper highlights the necessity of policy initiatives at the national or regional level to achieve emission reductions.

Territorializing International Travel Emissions: Geography and Magnitude of the Hidden Climate Footprint of Brussels

Kobe Boussauw et al.

Summary: This article investigates the impact of long-distance travel on the climate footprint of Brussels, finding that the official statistics do not include the climate footprint of international travel. Calculations suggest that the total estimated climate footprint of all international travel to Brussels is an additional 2.7 million tons of CO(2)eq. The practice of not allocating emissions caused by international travel to territorial units has kept the scale of this issue largely under the radar and hindered societal support for limiting growth in international aviation.

Prediction of aircraft engine emissions using ADS-B flight data

A. Filippone et al.

Summary: Real-time flight data from ADS-B and a flight performance computer program are integrated to predict aviation emissions, demonstrating the relationship between databases and software systems. The study fills a gap in aviation emissions inventories by providing estimates at a very granular level for specific routes, aircraft, fleets, or seasons. Emissions of NOx and water vapor are shown to concentrate around tropospheric altitudes for long-range flights, with cruise range being a key factor in exhaust emission levels.

COVID-19 and pathways to low-carbon air transport until 2050

Stefan Gossling et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a significant decline in global air transport, leading to a reduction in CO2 emissions. By implementing measures such as non-biogenic synthetic fuels and carbon pricing, it is possible to decarbonize air transport fuels by 2050 and avoid up to 26.5 Gt of CO2 emissions by 2050.

Replacing short-medium haul intra-European flights with high-speed rail: Impact on CO2 emissions and regional accessibility

Nicolo Avogadro et al.

Summary: The study analyzes the potential impact of cancelling short-medium haul air routes and substituting them with alternative transport modes in Europe. The research suggests that the policy could lead to significant CO2 savings and that regions efficiently served by alternative transport modes would bear the burden of reducing emissions from aviation.

High fuel efficiency is good for the environment: Balancing gains in fuel efficiency against trends in absolute consumption in the passenger aviation sector (FIRST REVISION)

Frederic Dobruszkes et al.

Summary: This article compares trends in fuel efficiency with absolute fuel burnt for passenger flights from nine European airports in 2018 versus 1996. It found that while fuel efficiency decreased, the absolute fuel burnt increased, mainly due to longer routes and low-cost carriers. These results raise questions about the effectiveness of high-speed rail in offsetting the impacts of aviation on climate change.

The emissions reduction potential of substituting short-haul flights with non-high-speed rail (NHSR): The case of Finland

Stefan Baumeister et al.

Summary: This study examined the feasibility of replacing short-haul flights with existing non-high-speed rail (NHSR) in Finland. Results indicated that such a change could result in a 95% reduction in emissions, and that NHSR could compete effectively with air travel for distances up to 400 km.
