Patient cognitive impairment associated with higher home health care delivery costs

Julia G. Burgdorf et al.

Summary: This study shows that home health agencies experience significantly higher costs when providing care for patients with cognitive impairment. Policies and models should consider patient cognitive function in order to incentivize agencies to provide care for those with cognitive impairment. Monitoring of home health access among Medicare beneficiaries with cognitive impairment is recommended.

Cognitive impairment associated with greater care intensity during home health care

Julia G. Burgdorf et al.

Care partner needs of people with neurodegenerative disorders: What are the needs, and how well do the current assessment tools capture these needs? A systematic meta-review

Irina Kinchin et al.

Summary: The burden on care partners supporting people with neurodegenerative disorders is significant, but current needs assessment tools do not fully capture their self-identified needs. The needs of care partners may vary according to disease trajectory, relationship to the care recipient, and demographic characteristics. It is important to align the tools with the self-reported needs of care partners to better understand unmet needs and provide appropriate support, especially in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Clinical and Demographic Profiles of Home Care Patients With Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias: Implications for Information Transfer Across Care Settings

Summary: Home health care clinicians often lack information about ADRD diagnoses when caring for individuals with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias, which may affect the care plan. A retrospective cohort study found that nearly half of the sample had ADRD diagnosis documented, but 63% of those with a prior diagnosis did not have it documented in the home health care assessment.

Unmet family caregiver training needs associated with acute care utilization during home health care

Julia G. Burgdorf et al.

Summary: This study investigated the unmet training needs among family caregivers assisting Medicare home health patients and examined the association between these unmet training needs and older adults' risk of acute care utilization during home health care. The results showed that unmet training needs among family caregivers were associated with a greater likelihood of acute care utilization among Medicare beneficiaries receiving home health care. Identifying and addressing family caregivers' training needs may reduce older adults' risk of acute care utilization during home health care.
