The consequences of the Trade and Cooperation Agreement for the UK's international trade

Ilaria Fusacchia et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA) between the UK and the EU, and predicts a significant reduction in UK trade and overall economic losses. Particularly, the industries of textiles, vehicles, and services, which are heavily reliant on trade with the EU, are expected to be most impacted due to increased trade barriers.

A global comparison of carbon-water-food nexus based on dietary consumption

Jing-Li Fan et al.

Summary: Studying the environmental impact of dietary consumption is crucial for achieving sustainable development goals. This research utilized an Environmentally Extended Multi-Regional Input-Output (EE-MRIO) model to explore the regional heterogeneity and synergy in the carbon-water-food nexus in nine countries. The findings reveal that dietary consumption is the main use of water withdrawal, high consumption of animal products contributes to high dietary carbon footprints, and developed countries with an animal-based diet have a higher share of imported footprints.

Exploring the spatial distribution of distributed energy in China

Bin Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the spatial distribution differences of China's distributed energy using the geographically weighted regression model. The empirical results demonstrate that technological progress, energy infrastructure investment, energy consumption structure, foreign oil dependence, and urbanization have varying impacts on distributed energy across different regions. It suggests that government managers should consider spatial heterogeneity in formulating distributed energy policies.

Impact assessment of population migration on energy consumption and carbon emissions in China: A spatial econometric investigation

Yan Bu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of population migration on energy consumption and carbon emissions using the spatial Durbin model. The results show that population migration has significant adverse effects on provinces with net outward population migration, leading to increased energy consumption, energy poverty, carbon emissions, and carbon reduction barriers.

Carbon footprint analysis of household consumption in greater Guadalajara reveal stark socio-spatial inequalities

Christian Hernandez et al.

Summary: Household consumption drives the majority of global greenhouse gas emissions, but most governments neglect the trade and consumption emissions as well as socio-spatial inequalities. Based on an analysis of Guadalajara Metropolitan Area, it is found that the household emissions are significantly higher than predicted values, and there are clear socio-spatial inequalities.

Challenges and opportunities for carbon neutrality in China

Zhu Liu et al.

Summary: China has made significant reductions in CO2 emissions, achieving objectives outlined in Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions and Nationally Determined Contributions. However, China still faces challenges in reaching peak CO2 emissions before 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality before 2060. Achieving these goals will require increasing non-fossil energy share, deploying negative-emission technologies, promoting low-carbon development regionally, and establishing a nationwide 'green market'.

Identifying critical sectors and supply chain paths for virtual water and energy-related water trade in China

Saige Wang et al.

Summary: This study quantified the blue and grey virtual water flows in China's supply chain through structural path analysis, revealing that energy-related sectors' virtual water outflows were primarily influenced by Transport equipment, Construction and Other services, while their inflows were mainly supported by Agriculture and Other manufacturing. Service-related sectors allocated more of their total virtual water consumption for pollution dilution, while manufacturing-related sectors spent less.

Energy efficiency performance of the industrial sector: From the perspective of technological gap in different regions in China

Xiaoling Ouyang et al.

Summary: Traditional estimation methods tend to overestimate energy efficiency performance due to the exclusion of heterogeneous production technology. Using the metafrontier method combined with SFA, this study analyzes energy efficiency performance of industrial sectors in China's provinces and finds distinct differences among regions, with the eastern region maintaining higher energy efficiency and technological gap ratios. The average industrial energy efficiency score of China is only 0.4396, indicating a significant potential for improvement.

Evaluating spatial characteristics and influential factors of industrial wastewater discharge in China: A spatial econometric approach

Yan Bu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the spatial characteristics and influencing factors of industrial wastewater discharge in China from 2000 to 2017. The results show significant spatial autocorrelation and agglomeration characteristics in provincial industrial wastewater effluents. Economic development, technological innovation, and environmental governance intensity have negative effects on wastewater discharge, while industrial structure has a positive effect.

Geographic transformation of China's internal population migration from 1995 to 2015: Insights from the migration centerline

Wei Qi et al.

Summary: Internal population migration in China shows a consistent trend towards the southeast but with shifts in migration centers towards the south and north over time. Coastal provinces are major contributors to in-migration centers, while out-migration centers are predominantly located in inland provinces. The geographic transformation of population migration centerlines in China is influenced by changes in economic and population centers, leading to stable southeast-oriented migrations.

Summary: This study developed a two-stage fuzzy-stochastic chance-constrained interval (TFCI) regional energy system optimization model to assess the rationality of existing hydropower exploitation plan in Sichuan, China. The results indicated the necessity to limit the expansion of hydropower installed capacity in order to improve the utilization efficiency of all renewable technologies.

Exploring the path of inter-provincial industrial transfer and carbon transfer in China via combination of multi-regional input?output and geographically weighted regression model

Yanan Wang et al.

Summary: The study indicates that the eastern coastal region of China is the largest industrial outflow and carbon inflow area, with inconsistent paths for industrial transfer and carbon transfer. Environmental regulation is negatively correlated with net carbon outflow. Energy intensity is the main factor influencing carbon transfer.

Effect of population migration on spatial carbon emission transfers in China

Cuixia Gao et al.

Summary: This study empirically assesses the impact of interprovincial population migration of China on trade-induced carbon transfers from 2002-2012. It found that migration and carbon transfers are complements, with larger migration flows correlating with larger trade-related carbon flows. The study also analyzes how migration affects interprovincial carbon transfers and how geographical factors play a role in shaping China's trade-induced carbon emissions situation.

Hui Li et al.

Summary: This study identifies critical transmission sectors and supply chain paths in China's virtual multi-regional grey water network, and suggests that improving the production efficiency of critical sectors can help reduce the economy-wide grey water footprint indirectly. Identifying supply chain paths provides explicit hotspots for production efficiency improvement measures.

The effects of poverty alleviation investment on carbon emissions in China based on the multiregional input-output model

Rao Fu et al.

Summary: The study utilized multiregional input-output analysis and carbon emission intensity analysis to find that investment in poverty alleviation led to an increase in China's economic aggregate growth. The construction and non-metal products industries made the highest contributions to the economy, while the effects of poverty alleviation varied across provinces. Poverty alleviation effectively reduced carbon emission intensity in 26 provinces, but certain provinces showed weaker effects.
