Does green credit policy promote innovation: A case of China

Qiaoxin Xie et al.

Summary: This paper constructs a quasi-natural experiment based on the implementation of the Green Credit Guidelines policy in 2012 in China and analyzes the impact of the policy on enterprises' innovation. The results show that the implementation of the policy has a negative impact on enterprises' innovation. In terms of corporate heterogeneity, the negative effect is greater for state-owned and high-leverage enterprises. Furthermore, credit financing cost is found to be an important intermediary for the policy's impact on corporate innovation.

When carbon emission trading meets a regulated industry: Evidence from the electricity sector of China

Jing Cao et al.

Summary: This paper presents firm-level evidence on China's carbon market pilots, showing that the ETS has no effect on coal efficiency of regulated coal-fired power plants but does lead to a significant reduction in coal consumption associated with ETS participation. The output contraction in treated plants is likely driven by government decisions rather than optimizing behavior, and there is a significant increase in production of non-coal-fired power plants in ETS regions.
