What happens when drivers of automated vehicles take over control in critical lane change situations?

Fabienne Roche et al.

Summary: According to legislation, drivers must have the ability to take over control during automated driving. However, research suggests that drivers tend to overreact in more critical situations, which impairs driving performance and increases the risk of accidents. This highlights the importance of developing assistance systems that support driver-initiated take-overs.

Developing human-machine trust: Impacts of prior instruction and automation failure on driver trust in partially automated vehicles

Jieun Lee et al.

Summary: This study manipulated prior information and automation failures to investigate the development of driver trust in automation. The results showed that trust steadily increased with simulation experience, decreased temporarily with automation failure, and was rebuilt with subsequent flawless experiences. Dependability was found to be the most dominant belief influencing driver trust.
