Prevalence and dynamics of distracted pedestrian behaviour at railway level crossings: Emerging issues

Gregoire S. Larue et al.

Summary: Recent studies have investigated the effects of distraction on pedestrian behavior at road intersections. However, limited research is available regarding the prevalence of distraction behavior at railway level crossings. This study conducted field observations in Brisbane, Australia and found that distraction behaviors such as talking and looking at mobile screens were prevalent among pedestrians. Factors such as age affected the prevalence of these behaviors. It was also found that distraction was a dynamic phenomenon, with some pedestrians stopping distractive tasks once they reached the crossing while others engaged in more distractive tasks on the road or crossing.

Predicting the intention of distracted pedestrians at road crossings

Amy L. O'Dell et al.

Summary: Despite improvements in road safety, pedestrian accidents remain common, and pedestrian distraction is a potential causal factor. This study used an online survey and the Theory of Planned Behaviour to predict pedestrian intention to cross the road while distracted. The results revealed that perceived behavioural control and crossing type were significant predictors of intention. The findings can be used to design interventions to prevent conflicts between distracted pedestrians and vehicles.

Modeling the influence of mobile phone use distraction on pedestrian reaction times to green signals: A multilevel mixed-effects parametric survival model

Yan Liu et al.

Summary: Understanding the impact of mobile phone distraction on pedestrian behavior is crucial for safety and performance evaluations. This study found that distractions from mobile phone use significantly lengthen pedestrian reaction times, with males over 40 performing worse in road segment crosswalks with longer distraction durations. Factors such as traffic awareness levels also influence pedestrian reactions.

To cross or not to cross: Impact of visual and auditory cues on pedestrians' crossing decision-making

Francisco Soares et al.

Summary: The controlled study of pedestrians’ crossing decision-making analyzed the roles of visual and auditory cues, showing that lower speeds and higher distances lead to higher percentages of crossings and response times. The auditory condition did not significantly affect participants’ responses, indicating that participants’ crossing decision was mainly based on their visual perception of the movement characteristics of the approaching vehicle.
