Productivity impact of drought tolerant maize varieties under rainfall stress in Malawi: A continuous treatment approach

Samson P. Katengeza et al.

Summary: The study found a strong positive correlation between the adoption of drought-tolerant maize varieties and maize yield, increasing the area planted with DT varieties can significantly increase maize yield and help reduce production losses due to drought. Policies promoting increased allocation to DT varieties hold the potential to enhance food security, while further efforts are needed to breed DT varieties that are adaptable to various climatic conditions.

Pluralistic Seed System Development: A Path to Seed Security?

Teshome Hunduma Mulesa et al.

Summary: Seed security is crucial for smallholder farmers in Ethiopia, where farmers primarily obtain seeds from informal sources and face challenges such as discrepancies between preferred and actual seeds used, limited availability of improved and certified seeds, quality issues, and unequal access to preferred seeds and information based on gender, age, and wealth. The country's pluralistic seed system development strategy addresses many of these challenges, but implementation, especially for the informal seed system, is lagging behind. Overcoming political, organizational, and economic obstacles is essential for achieving inclusive and integrative seed sector development.

Adoption analysis of agricultural technologies in the semiarid northern Ethiopia: a panel data analysis

Menasbo Gebru et al.

Summary: This study examines the adoption of improved wheat, drought-tolerant teff, and cash crops in the semi-arid Tigray region of northern Ethiopia. The results show that while some smallholders have adopted the new crops, the overall adoption rate remains low, with factors such as population density, previous rainfall, and landholding size influencing adoption.

Implications of food-for-work programs for consumption and production diversity: Evidence from the Tigray Region of Ethiopia

Bethelhem Legesse Debela et al.

Summary: Food-based transfer programs, such as food-for-work (FFW) programs, have the potential to improve dietary diversity among participants. However, the study found that FFW participation did not lead to changes in production diversity. The results suggest that interventions aiming to improve food security and dietary quality in low-income populations could benefit from incorporating food-based transfer programs.
