Atypical Tactile Perception in Early Childhood Autism

Svenja Espenhahn et al.

Summary: This study assessed different aspects of tactile perception in young children with autism. The findings suggest that autistic children have slower perceptual-motor processing speed and/or greater distractibility, as evidenced by their elevated and more variable reaction times. They also showed higher thresholds in amplitude discrimination and temporal order judgement compared to neurotypical children. Furthermore, these perceptual metrics did not correlate with social or tactile sensitivities reported by parents.

Sex differences in sensory processing in children with autism spectrum disorder

Summary: This study investigated sex differences in sensory processing symptoms in ASD children and TD children, finding that female ASD children exhibit more severe symptoms compared to their male counterparts. These findings have implications for characterizing female autism profiles and improving early detection, diagnosis, and treatment.

Region-specific elevations of glutamate plus glutamine correlate with the sensory symptoms of autism spectrum disorders

Jason L. He et al.

Summary: Individuals on the autism spectrum are often hypersensitive or hyposensitive to sensory input, which may be related to an increased ratio of excitatory to inhibitory signaling in autism spectrum disorders. Studies have found elevated levels of Glx in the primary sensorimotor cortex in ASD, associated with sensory hyper- and hyporeactivity symptoms as well as reduced feed-forward inhibition during tactile perception.
