Validation of a digital, tablet-based version of the Trail Making Test in the increment elta platform

Ebru Baykara et al.

Summary: Using digital technology for neuropsychological assessment is becoming popular. This study compared a digital version of the Trail Making Test with the standard paper version and found significant correlation between the two. Participants were generally faster on the digital platform. Traditional Trail Making Tests can be successfully adapted to a digital platform with new normative data.

Relationship of executive functions and physical abilities in elite soccer players

Hans-Erik Scharfen et al.

Summary: This study found that there are correlations between executive functions and maximal anaerobic parameters in elite soccer players, such as the relationship between working memory capacity and cognitive flexibility with sprint, countermovement jump, and drop jump. Specifically, sprint and jump seem to be more closely linked to cognitive skills rather than endurance parameters.

The Bidirectional Relationship between Vision and Cognition A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Tai Anh Vu et al.

Summary: The results of the systematic review and meta-analysis confirmed that individuals with visual impairment were more likely to have cognitive impairment, while those with cognitive impairment were more likely to have visual impairment. Factors such as age, sex, and follow-up duration partially explained the significant heterogeneity in the associations between visual impairment and cognitive impairment.

Unraveling circuits of visual perception and cognition through the superior colliculus

Michele A. Basso et al.

Summary: The superior colliculus is a conserved structure that integrates sensory information to drive reflex behaviors, but also plays a role in higher cognitive functions like attention and decision-making. With connections to forebrain structures, it has the potential to influence processing throughout the nervous system.

Neural Substrates of Visual Perception and Working Memory: Two Sides of the Same Coin or Two Different Coins?

Megan Roussy et al.

Summary: Studies suggest that the prefrontal cortex plays a fundamental role in working memory but a lesser role in visual perception. Neurons in early visual areas of macaques mainly encode perceptual signals, while areas downstream from V4 and MT contain neurons that encode both perceptual and/or working memory signals. The differences in cortical architecture may contribute to the differential encoding of perceptual and working memory signals between early visual areas and higher association areas.

Fundamental relationships of executive functions and physiological abilities with game intelligence, game time and injuries in elite soccer players

Hans-Erik Scharfen et al.

Summary: The study found correlations between cognitive abilities and game intelligence, with executive functions showing fundamental associations with game intelligence and game time across all age groups. Certain physiological abilities may influence game time and injuries in elite soccer players depending on age.

Primitive visual channels have a causal role in cognitive transfer

William Saban et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that lower visual channels play a crucial role in cognitive transfer of complex skills, with training in one eye's visuospatial abilities affecting the untrained eye. This cognitive transfer is observed not only for near transfer problems, but also for far transfer problems.

Cognitive training in elite soccer players: evidence of narrow, but not broad transfer to visual and executive function

Hans-Erik Scharfen et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the effectiveness of NeuroTracker 3D multiple-object tracking training in youth elite soccer players, showing improvements in tracking ability with negligible effects on visual clarity and inhibition. The strict single-task NeuroTracker 3D-MOT training had limited transfer to other visual or executive functions, suggesting a need for future research on sport-specific dual-task NeuroTracker 3D-MOT.
