Forecasting oil futures price volatility with economic policy uncertainty: a CARR-MIDAS model

Xinyu Wu et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a new model (CARR-MIDAS) that incorporates economic policy uncertainty into predicting crude oil futures price volatility. The empirical results show that these economic policy uncertainty indices have a significantly negative impact on the volatility of oil futures prices, with the China EPU index outperforming the others in forecasting.

Of votes and viruses: the UK economy and economic policy uncertainty

Michael Ellington et al.

Summary: This paper examines the relation between GDP growth, Divisia money growth, CPI inflation, financial stress, and the UK's economic policy uncertainty in the context of its departure from the European Union. The study finds a contractionary effect of economic policy uncertainty on GDP growth, enhanced GDP growth by Divisia monetary stimulus, and hampered GDP growth by increases in financial stress. Moreover, the results from a stochastic volatility in the mean threshold model reveal different dynamics of transmission of shocks between economic uncertainty and the indicators studied across high and low economic policy uncertainty regimes.

The Mediating Role of Public Health between Environmental Policy Tools and Economic Development

Hui Xu et al.

Summary: Environmental pollution has negative impacts on public health and economic development. Environmental regulation is the primary method used by the government to address environmental pollution issues. This study examines the effectiveness of command-control policy tools and economic incentive policy tools on public health and economic development using China's provincial panel data from 2013 to 2017. The findings suggest that economic incentive policy tools have a positive impact on economic development, while command-control policy tools do not show a significant relationship. Additionally, there is a positive correlation between economic incentive policy tools and public health. Public health plays a partial mediating role between economic incentive policy tools and economic development.

Carbon emissions index decomposition and carbon emissions prediction in Xinjiang from the perspective of population-related factors, based on the combination of STIRPAT model and neural network

Chai Ziyuan et al.

Summary: In this study, the STIRPAT model was used to examine the effects of various factors on carbon dioxide emissions in Xinjiang using time series data from 2000 to 2019. The findings showed that urbanization, per capita GDP, per capita mutton consumption, and education had significant positive effects on carbon emissions, while the number of vehicles had the largest positive impact. Household size and household direct energy consumption structure had a significantly negative impact on carbon emissions. Based on these findings, the GA-BP neural network was applied to predict the carbon emission trend in Xinjiang from 2020 to 2050. The results revealed that the low-carbon scenario would peak earliest, between 2029 and 2033.

Summary: This paper examines the influence of Economic Policy Uncertainty (EPU) on environmental performance, and explores the moderating effect of social development and political regimes. The study finds that EPU has a negative impact on environmental performance, and both the absolute level and increase in EPU worsen environmental performance. Additionally, higher economic performance, globalization, and good governance can help mitigate the adverse environmental effects of EPU. The study also reveals that the negative effect of EPU on environmental performance is stronger in right-wing countries, autocracies, and non-OECD countries.
