Tracking Ions the Direct Way: Long-Range Li+ Dynamics in the Thio-LISICON Family Li4MCh4 (M = Sn, Ge; Ch = S, Se) as Probed by 7Li NMR Relaxometry and 7Li Spin-Alignment Echo NMR

Katharina Hogrefe et al.

Summary: Researchers utilized model compounds from the Li(4)MCh(4) system to study the application of SAE NMR spectroscopy in probing Li+ exchange processes. The results showed that SAE NMR provides a model-independent approach to accessing motional correlation rates, offering valuable insights into the mechanisms of rapid ion exchange in solids.

Fuzzy logic: about the origins of fast ion dynamics in crystalline solids

M. Gombotz et al.

Summary: Nuclear magnetic resonance is a valuable tool for analyzing ionic jump processes in solids and shedding light on rapid diffusion in materials relevant for energy storage. Processes involving Li+ ions in compounds with strong site preferences may lead to slow diffusion, while the loss of site preference can result in rapid cation diffusion, similar to glassy materials. This effect is also seen in other materials such as cation-mixed fluorides and garnets.

Insulator:conductor interfacial regions - Li ion dynamics in the nanocrystalline dispersed ionic conductor LiF:TiO2

M. Gombotz et al.

Summary: The study shows that in nanocrystalline composites of LiF and TiO2, TiO2 leads to significant changes in ion dynamics, resulting in a remarkable increase in overall conductivity. NMR experiments revealed that Li+ is the primary charge carrier responsible for the increase in ionic conductivity. Therefore, the introduction of heterogeneous conductor:insulator contacts is an effective tool for engineering the interfacial regions in such two-phase systems.

High Li+ and Na+ Conductivity in New Hybrid Solid Electrolytes based on the Porous MIL-121 Metal Organic Framework

Roman Zettl et al.

Summary: This study reports a new hybrid Li+ and Na+ conducting SSE based on the MIL-121 MOF structure, with ion exchange functionalizing the free carboxylic units along the 1D pores. The ion dynamics were investigated using impedance spectroscopy and NMR spin-lattice relaxation, revealing a transition from correlated to uncorrelated motion at higher temperature. The findings suggest potential development of high-performance MOF-based hybrid SSEs for ASSBs.

Conductor-Insulator Interfaces in Solid Electrolytes: A Design Strategy to Enhance Li-Ion Dynamics in Nanoconfined LiBH4/Al2O3

Roman Zettl et al.

Summary: Synthesizing Li-ion-conducting solid electrolytes with application-relevant properties for new energy storage devices is challenging and often requires a combination of strategies to achieve high ionic conductivity. Introducing conductor-insulator interfacial regions in nanostructured materials is an important design strategy, facilitating rapid Li+ jump processes.

Broadband impedance spectroscopy of Li4Ti5O12: from nearly constant loss effects to long-range ion dynamics

Bernhard Gadermaier et al.

Summary: Li4Ti5O12 (LTO) is known as a robust and long-lasting anode material in lithium-ion batteries, but its Li-ion transport properties are not completely understood. Research using impedance spectroscopy revealed complex Li+ ion dynamics in LTO, including long-range ion transport and short-range ion dynamics processes. The findings help understand the superior electrochemical properties of LTO.
