Chiral assembly of organic luminogens with aggregation-induced emission

Chenchen Liu et al.

Summary: Chirality is crucial in chemistry, biology, and optoelectronic materials, with recent interest in chiral materials with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties. The most effective strategy for designing a chiral AIE luminogen is to attach a chiral scaffold to an AIE-active fluorophore through covalent bonds, and latent chirality can also be induced in some propeller-like or shell-like AIEgens. Additionally, the introduction of an AIE unit into chiral materials can enhance their efficiency in circularly polarized luminescence and the dissymmetric factors of their helical architectures formed through self-assembly.

Summary: Fluorescent silica organic-inorganic nanohybrids combine the luminescence performance of organic fluorescent dyes and the advantages of silica nanomaterials, attracting research interest in various luminous applications. The emergence of aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) has paved the way for highly efficient fluorescent silica nanohybrids. By restricting the intramolecular motion of AIEgens in the silica matrix, FSNs with intense luminescence can be achieved.

Direct Visualization of Chiral Amplification of Chiral Aggregation Induced Emission Molecules in Nematic Liquid Crystals

Qing Xia et al.

Summary: This study provides a systematic exploration of chiral amplification of chiral aggregation induced emission (AIE) molecules in liquid crystals (LCs) from direct visualization of their co-assemblies at the nano scale to theoretical calculation of the molecular packing modes on a single molecular level. The direct visualization using AFM imaging revealed that chiral AIE molecules self-assembled into helical fibers to serve as the helical template for LCs to bind, forming co-assemblies with morphologies of pearled necklaces or thick rods. Theoretical calculations suggested that chiral AIE molecules were packed into left-handed helical fibers with empty space between neighboring molecules, providing binding sites for LCs.

Hao Luo et al.

Summary: Two novel tetraphenylethylene derivatives, A12-TPE and T12-TPE, were prepared by incorporating different chiral D-gluconic acid substituents. A12-TPE exhibited a helical supermolecular structure and circularly polarized luminescent (CPL) performance, while T12-TPE showed a lamellar structure without CPL signal. Improved enantioselectivity in thiol-ene photopolymerization of sulphur-containing polymers with circularly polarized luminescence†

Chen-Lu He et al.

Summary: Circularly polarized light-triggered enantioselective thiol-ene reactions allow for the synthesis of optically active poly(thioether) directly from racemic monomers, but low enantioselectivity has been a challenge. The addition of achiral hydrogen atom donors can greatly enhance enantioselectivity and lead to the synthesis of poly(thioether) with distinct circularly polarized luminescence. The enantioselectivity of these reactions can be experimentally controlled by varying reaction kinetics, resulting in polymers with a significant excess of enantiomeric units.
