Safety and immunogenicity of a high-dose quadrivalent influenza vaccine administered concomitantly with a third dose of the mRNA-1273 SARS-CoV-2 vaccine in adults aged ≥65 years: a phase 2, randomised, open-label study

Ruvim Izikson et al.

Summary: This study assessed the safety and immunogenicity of concomitant administration of high-dose quadrivalent influenza vaccine (QIV-HD) and mRNA-1273 vaccine booster in older adults. The results showed no safety concerns or immune interference in the coadministration group, supporting the recommendations for co-administration. The antibody responses to influenza and SARS-CoV-2 were similar between the coadministration and QIV-HD groups.

Comparative Effectiveness of Influenza Vaccines Among US Medicare Beneficiaries Ages 65 Years and Older During the 2019-2020 Season

Hector S. Izurieta et al.

Summary: In this study, we analyzed the relative vaccine effectiveness of different types of influenza vaccines in preventing hospital encounters among Medicare beneficiaries aged >= 65 years during the 2019-2020 season. The results showed that recombinant quadrivalent vaccine was moderately more effective than other vaccines during the season, while high-dose trivalent and adjuvanted trivalent vaccines were more effective than quadrivalent vaccines, emphasizing the contributions of antigen amount and adjuvant use to vaccine effectiveness.

Effect of High-Dose Trivalent vs Standard-Dose Quadrivalent Influenza Vaccine on Mortality or Cardiopulmonary Hospitalization in Patients With High-risk Cardiovascular Disease A Randomized Clinical Trial

Orly Vardeny et al.

Summary: In patients with high-risk cardiovascular disease, high-dose trivalent inactivated influenza vaccine did not significantly reduce all-cause mortality or cardiopulmonary hospitalizations compared with standard-dose quadrivalent inactivated influenza vaccine, but influenza vaccination remains strongly recommended in this population.

Safety, Reactogenicity, and Health-Related Quality of Life After Trivalent Adjuvanted vs Trivalent High-Dose Inactivated Influenza Vaccines in Older Adults A Randomized Clinical Trial

Kenneth E. Schmader et al.

Summary: A randomized blinded clinical trial compared the safety, reactogenicity, and changes in health-related quality of life (HRQOL) scores between trivalent adjuvanted inactivated influenza vaccine (aIIV3) and trivalent high-dose inactivated influenza vaccine (HD-IIV3) in adults aged 65 years and older. The study found that both vaccines showed similar safety profiles and HRQOL effects, supporting the use of either vaccine to prevent influenza in older adults.

Postmarketing safety surveillance of quadrivalent recombinant influenza vaccine: Reports to the vaccine adverse event reporting system

Emily Jane Woo et al.

Summary: The study reviewed adverse event reports following vaccination with the quadrivalent recombinant influenza vaccine, finding that the majority were non-serious events. In some cases, allergic reactions were reported, including two individuals experiencing positive rechallenge. It is important to consider the potential underlying predisposition in individuals and continue postmarketing safety surveillance.

Influenza Vaccine Effectiveness and Waning Effect in Hospitalized Older Adults. Valencia Region, Spain, 2018/2019 Season

Ainara Mira-Iglesias et al.

Summary: The 2018/2019 influenza vaccine showed moderate effectiveness against overall influenza, A(H1N1)pdm09 and A(H3N2) with estimated rates of 46%, 41%, and 45% respectively. Significant protection was observed for patients >= 75 years old who received the adjuvanted vaccine. Additionally, an intra-seasonal not relevant waning effect and a not significant IVE decreasing trend over time were detected.

A retrospective cohort study assessing relative effectiveness of adjuvanted versus high-dose trivalent influenza vaccines among older adults in the United States during the 2018-19 influenza season

Stephen Pelton et al.

Summary: The study found that during the 2018-19 influenza season, influenza-related hospitalization/ER visits and associated costs among people aged >= 65 were comparable between aTIV and TIV-HD. aTIV was slightly more effective in preventing influenza-related office visits and any CRD event as compared to TIV-HD in this population.
