Optimized principal component analysis and multi-state Bayesian network integrated method for chemical process monitoring and variable state prediction

Nan Liu et al.

Summary: The traditional principal component analysis (PCA) is optimized by replacing the covariance matrix with Spearman ranking correlation coefficient (SRCC) matrix and introducing Gaussian transition through Johnson transformation. Multi-state Bayesian network (MBN) is developed to recognize a node into multiple states, complementing the weaknesses of commonly used BN. The proposed integrated method (OPCA-MBN) utilizes OPCA to detect faults and provide evidence to MBN for diagnosing fault or normal oscillation propagation pathways, demonstrating practicality and effectiveness in the Tennessee Eastman (TE) process.

Effects of methylisothiazolinone and octylisothiazolinone on development and thyroid endocrine system in zebrafish larvae

Sujin Lee et al.

Summary: The study investigated the developmental toxicity and effects on the thyroid endocrine system in zebrafish embryos exposed to MIT and OIT. The results showed that exposure to these two isothiazolinones led to decreased hatchability, larvae survival, and body length in zebrafish larvae, as well as decreased levels of thyroid hormones. Significant gene expression changes and epigenetic deregulation of miRNAs were also observed. OIT exhibited higher toxicity compared to MIT.

Microbial electrochemical sensor for water biotoxicity monitoring

Na Chu et al.

Summary: This paper reviews cutting-edge studies on strategies to create high performance microbial electrochemical biosensors, focusing on different sensing elements including bioanode and abiotic cathode elements. These sensors have been successfully applied in the laboratory to detect various toxicants, with recent advancements in biocathode sensing elements highlighted for their ability to solve issues of low sensitivity and high false-negative rates in water biotoxicity monitoring. Discussions on limitations and potential solutions associated with the practical application of microbial electrochemical sensors for water biotoxicity monitoring are also emphasized.

Determination of methylisothiazolinone in waters. Comprehensive study about electrochemical behaviour on gold electrode and optimization of square-wave voltammetric methods

Ma Lucia Abad-Gil et al.

Summary: In this study, the electrochemical behavior of MIT on a gold electrode was investigated and square wave voltammetric methods were developed for its determination at different concentration levels. MIT showed an irreversible and diffusion-controlled oxidation process, with pH-dependent potential and peak current values. By using square-wave voltammetry (SWV) and adsorptive stripping approach (SWAdSV), it is possible to determine MIT in water samples with high sensitivity and low detection limits. Both SWV and SWAdSV methods were successfully applied for the analysis of MIT in different water samples.

Sunmi Kim et al.

Summary: Global regulations on biocides have been strengthened to protect human health and the environment. This study investigated the combined inhalation exposure scenarios of biocides in household chemical products in South Korea, finding that binary mixtures were the most common with phthalthrin and d-phenothrin being the most frequently appearing combination. Based on frequency of use, a priority list of biocide mixture combinations was suggested for further evaluation of combined toxicity.
