Mechanical behaviour of multi-panel cross laminated timber shear-walls with stiff connectors

Andrea Polastri et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the potential of using multi-panel cross laminated timber shear-walls with stiff vertical joints as a structural solution for multi-storey timber buildings in low seismic prone areas. The mechanical behavior of two types of shear-key connectors is investigated through experimental testing at joint and wall level. The results show that joints with a single shear-key connector exhibit stiffness and strength comparable to those with traditional screw connections.

Mechanical Properties and Dimensional Stability of Poplar Wood Modified by Pre-Compression and Post-Vacuum-Thermo Treatments

Zaixin He et al.

Summary: In this study, the fast-growing poplar wood was modified using combined treatments of pre-compression and post-vacuum-thermo modification to improve its mechanical strength and dimensional stability. The results showed that the treatment process gradually densified the wood structure and significantly improved its mechanical properties and dimensional stability.

Durability and protection of mass timber structures: A review

Samuel Ayanleye et al.

Summary: This review discusses the advantages and opportunities of applying mass timber (MT) in tall buildings, as well as the durability issues associated with MT application. The traditional wood protection techniques and their potential for MT protection are examined. Recent studies on MT durability evaluation and progress in MT structure protection through moisture control strategy are surveyed. The effects of preservative, thermal, and chemical treatment approaches on the properties of MT are summarized, and the future of the field is discussed.

Durability study of glulam timber under cyclic moisture loading

Placide Uwizeyimana et al.

Summary: Glulam timber is an interesting solution for environmentally friendly and mechanically strong structures, but its durability under Wetting/Drying (W/D) climatic conditions is not well understood. This study examines the impact of W/D cycles on the bending mechanical properties of glulam, finding significant influence on bending strength but no significant effect on elastic modulus. Monitoring moisture content provides insights into sorption/desorption mechanisms in wood during cycling.

Effects of wood species, connection system, and wall-support interface type on cyclic behaviors of cross-laminated timber (CLT) walls under lateral loads

Dang Khai Tran et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of wood species, connection systems, and wall-support interface types on the cyclic behaviors of cross-laminated timber (CLT) walls under lateral loads. The findings indicated that CLT walls with higher density and rigid support demonstrated greater strength and lower deformation compared to those with lower density and flexible support.

Structural performance of hybrid Poplar-Beech cross-laminated-timber (CLT)

Hojat Hematabadi et al.

Summary: The study investigated the structural out-of-plane bending performance of hybrid Poplar-Beech CLT through experimental and theoretical methods, showing that it outperformed Poplar CLT in various span-to-thickness ratios. The hybrid CLT had greater load-carrying capacity but exhibited similar failure modes to Poplar CLT.

CLT Shear Walls Anchored with Shear-Tension Angle Brackets: Experimental Tests and Finite-Element Modeling

Giuseppe D'Arenzo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of TTV angle bracket in anchoring CLT shear walls, exploring the coupled shear-tension behavior and assessing its effectiveness as an alternative to traditional mechanical anchors. Results indicate that the plastic load redistributions of the TTV angle bracket can impact the overall mechanical behavior of the CLT shear wall.
