Incidence, Risk, and Outcome of Pedicle Screw Loosening in Degenerative Lumbar Scoliosis Patients Undergoing Long-Segment Fusion

Lei Yuan et al.

Summary: This retrospective study aimed to investigate the incidence, risk factors, and outcomes of pedicle screw loosening in degenerative lumbar scoliosis (DLS) patients undergoing long-segment spinal fusion surgery. The results showed that screw loosening was common and tended to occur in the lowest instrumented vertebra (LIV) or uppermost instrumented vertebra (UIV). Risk factors for screw loosening included lateral subluxation >= 8 mm, osteopenia, osteoporosis, fusion to the sacrum, postoperative TLK greater than 10 degrees, and SVA imbalance.

Opportunistic Osteoporosis Screening Reveals Low Bone Density in Patients With Screw Loosening After Lumbar Semi-Rigid Instrumentation: A Case-Control Study

Maximilian T. Loeffler et al.

Summary: The opportunistically assessed BMD was found to be significantly associated with the outcome after spinal surgery, with patients having lower BMD more likely to experience screw loosening. This study suggests that opportunistic BMD screening can help guide surgeons in preventing screw loosening and achieving better outcomes.

Application study of three-dimensional printed navigation template between traditional and novel cortical bone trajectory on osteoporosis lumbar spine

Wenjie Shi et al.

Summary: This study compared the safety and accuracy of traditional and novel cortical bone screws placement in osteoporosis lumbar spine using 3D printed navigation template. The success rates of both techniques were 100% in 3D printed specimens, while in anatomical specimens, the success rate was 97.5% for both traditional and novel navigation templates.
