A new comprehensive grading for giant pituitary adenomas: SLAP grading

Dhaval Shukla et al.

Summary: The study developed a new grading system for giant pituitary adenomas and found that a total score of >= 5 was associated with subtotal resection.

Surgical management of giant pituitary neuroendocrine tumors: Meta-analysis and consensus statement on behalf of the EANS skull base section

Giulia Cossu et al.

Summary: This study aimed to optimize the surgical management of giant pituitary neuroendocrine tumors (GPitNETs) and provide a consensus statement based on a systematic review and meta-analysis. The results showed that the endoscopic endonasal approach was the preferred treatment option, with no significant difference observed in gross total resection rates among different surgical techniques. The study also recommended that patients with GPitNETs with a more complex and multilobular structure should be treated in tertiary care centers.

Giant Non-Functioning Pituitary Adenoma: Clinical Characteristics and Therapeutic Outcomes

Pedro Iglesias et al.

Summary: The study found that giant non-functioning pituitary adenomas (gNFPAs) are often associated with hypopituitarism and visual field defects at diagnosis. Surgical treatment can result in complete tumor resection in approximately 30% of patients, with significant reduction in tumor size. Positive immunostaining for gonadotropins is associated with tumor absence at last revision, while female sex and invasion of the cavernous sinuses are linked to tumor persistence.

Development and clinical validation of a grading system for pituitary adenoma consistency

Martin J. Rutkowski et al.

Summary: The study developed a 5-point grading scale for PA consistency based on intraoperative characteristics, ranging from cystic/hemorrhagic tumors to calcified tumors. Results demonstrated that PA consistency was associated with surgical outcomes, extent of resection, and complications, with lower consistency scores being more likely to achieve gross-total resection.

The Shape grading system: a classification for growth patterns of pituitary adenomas

Sven Berkmann et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of different tumor shapes on gross total resection rates and outcomes in nonfunctioning pituitary adenomas, establishing a Shape grading system. Results showed that higher Shape grades were associated with lower GTR rates, larger tumor remnants, and the need for further treatments.
