Air damping of high performance resonating micro-mirrors with angular vertical comb-drive actuators

Russell Farrugia et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the damping effects of high frequency scanning micro-mirrors using time-dependent damping moment calculations. The comparison between simulation and measurement results reveals the ineffectiveness of simplified damping models for resonant MEMS devices within the operating range of high performance micro-scanners.

Critical functions and inf-sup stability of Crouzeix-Raviart elements

C. Carstensen et al.

Summary: In this paper, we prove that Crouzeix-Raviart finite elements of polynomial order p >= 5, p odd, are inf-sup stable for the Stokes problem on triangulations. By introducing a new representation and deriving all possible critical functions, we show that they belong to the range of the divergence operator, resulting in the stability of the discretization.

High order direct parametrisation of invariant manifolds for model order reduction of finite element structures: application to large amplitude vibrations and uncovering of a folding point

Alessandra Vizzaccaro et al.

Summary: This paper investigates model-order reduction methods for geometrically nonlinear structures using the parametrisation method of invariant manifolds. Three different styles of parametrisation are introduced and applied to three different examples, demonstrating the effectiveness of the technique in various scenarios.

Analysis of the Nonlinear Response of Piezo-Micromirrors with the Harmonic Balance Method

Andrea Opreni et al.

Summary: This work focuses on the simulation and testing of MEMS micromirrors with hardening and softening behavior excited by patches of piezoelectric materials. The forces exerted by the piezoelectric patches are modelled using the theory of ferroelectrics and the solution is achieved through the Finite Element Method and Harmonic Balance Method. The numerical results were validated with experimental data collected on the devices.

Top-down, multi-scale numerical simulation of MEMS microphones under guided free fall tests

David Faraci et al.

Summary: During guided free fall tests on MEMS microphones placed on a mock smartphone, failures were observed. High-speed camera recordings of the moments before and after the first impact were used as input for three-dimensional finite element analyses at various scales to understand potential ruptures at a local level. The analysis showed that failures in some cases were due to a combination of fluid-induced air over-pressure and solid-induced displacements at the anchors, rather than a single loading condition.

Model order reduction based on direct normal form: application to large finite element MEMS structures featuring internal resonance

Andrea Opreni et al.

Summary: The method detailed in the text is based on direct normal form computation for large FE models, enabling operation directly from physical space and avoiding the computation of complete eigenfunctions spectrum. Explicit solutions provided facilitate a fully non-intrusive reduction method.
