Self-powered soft robot in the Mariana Trench

Guorui Li et al.

Summary: The deep sea, with its high pressure, remains a challenge to explore, but certain deep-sea creatures are able to thrive at extreme depths. By integrating electronics in a silicone matrix, we developed an untethered soft robot for deep-sea exploration, showcasing the potential of designing soft, lightweight devices for extreme conditions.

Development of the Ultralight Hybrid Pneumatic Artificial Muscle: Modelling and optimization

Seonggun Joe et al.

Summary: Pneumatic artificial muscles (PAMs) are key technologies in soft robotics, but still face challenges in payload and repeatability. A novel Ultralight Hybrid PAM (UH-PAM) using vacuum actuation and open-cell foam achieves a contraction ratio of 50% and a maximum payload of 3 kg while weighing only 20 g. Dynamic analysis shows a contraction phase rise time of 0.5 s, and hysteresis can be reduced to 11.5% with tuning. A 3 DoFs Stewart platform demonstrates the potential of this soft actuation approach.
