Tracing CO2 leakage and migration using the hydrogeochemical tracers during a controlled CO2 release field test

Hyun-Kwon Do et al.

Summary: This study conducted a controlled CO2 release experiment in a siliciclastic aquifer in South Korea to investigate the hydrogeochemical effects of CO2 leakage on shallow groundwater. The experiment demonstrated that a limited amount of minerals dissolved and cation exchange occurred at the early stage of CO2 leakage. Additionally, Li was identified as an effective tracer for monitoring CO2 migration in siliciclastic aquifers.

Underground sources of drinking water chemistry changes in response to potential CO2 leakage

Ting Xiao et al.

Summary: This study quantified the impact of potential CO2 leakage from geologic CO2 sequestration reservoirs on underground sources of drinking water quality. Key mechanisms identified were carbonate mineral impurity and cation exchange, requiring effective leakage detection tools for long-term safety of GCS projects.

Tracing CO2 leakage and migration using the hydrogeochemical tracers during a controlled CO2 release field test

Hyun-Kwon Do et al.

Summary: This study investigated the hydrogeochemical effects of CO2 leakage on shallow groundwater and identified Li as an effective hydrogeochemical tracer for monitoring CO2 migration in siliciclastic aquifers. The study also found that concentrations of hydrochemical elements displayed different behaviors at the arrival of CO2 plume.

Aquifer-CO2 leak project: Physicochemical characterization of the CO2 leakage impact on a carbonate shallow freshwater aquifer

Anelia Petit et al.

Summary: The study aims to understand the environmental impact of a CO2 leak on water quality in a carbonate freshwater aquifer, as well as CO2-water-carbonate interactions. Using an Oligocene carbonate underground quarry experiment, key indicators for monitoring a gas plume during CO2 geological storage were identified, along with the importance of the interaction between CO2 and limestone.

Summary: A two-phase flow model based on Navier-Stokes-Darcy equations is used to simulate and predict the dynamics of injected CO2 dispersion and dissolution through sediments into the water column at the Goldeneye STEMM-CCS field experiment. The model is validated by diagnostic simulations to compare with field observation data, revealing the dynamics of the CO2 plume development in the sediments.
