Evaluation and obstacle factors of coordination development of regional water-energy-food-ecology system under green development: a case study of Yangtze River Economic Belt, China

Ding Tonghui et al.

Summary: This study innovatively introduced the PSR model and CCD model to analyze the coupling mechanism and development coordination of the WEFE system, finding that the development of the energy and food subsystems had a significant impact. In terms of time dimension, Shanghai showed a gradual upward trend in the coordination of the WEFE system, while provinces like Jiangsu experienced a jumping change from near coordination to primary coordination. In the spatial dimension, the CCD values of the WEFE system in the Yangtze River Economic Belt exhibited a concave distribution pattern of higher in the east and west, but lower in the middle during the study period.

Evaluating water-energy-food system of Yellow River basin based on type-2 fuzzy sets and Pressure-State-Response model

Donglin Gu et al.

Summary: This study aims to establish a Pressure-State-Response (PSR) model to evaluate the water-energy-food (WEF) system security and clarify the main factors affecting WEF development, system state and social response. Different quantitative methods were used to assess the WEF system security in the nine provinces of the Yellow River basin from 2006 to 2019. The results show that the WEF system security in each province has improved over time.

Flood vulnerability assessment using the triangular fuzzy number-based analytic hierarchy process and support vector machine model for the Belt and Road region

Yu Duan et al.

Summary: This study developed a vulnerability assessment model using triangular fuzzy number-based analytic hierarchy process and support vector machine to analyze flood vulnerability in the Belt and Road region. The results showed that most areas have low exposure and disaster reduction capability, with high-vulnerable areas primarily located in southern and eastern China, northern India, most areas of Bangladesh, the Indus Valley in Pakistan, the Nile River Basin in Egypt, and the central region of Indonesia. These findings provide valuable scientific and technological evidence for the prevention and mitigation of flood disasters in countries along the Belt and Road region.

Characterizing and Defining of Designing Sustainable Product-Service Systems Applied to Distributed Water-Energy-Food Nexus

Meng Gao et al.

Summary: The Water-Energy-Food (WEF) Nexus plays a significant role in addressing sustainability issues internationally. However, there is little attention given to the challenges related to sustainable livelihoods. This paper proposes the integration of Sustainable Product-Service System (SPSS) and Distributed Economies (DE) models to focus on small-scale and localized WEF systems, aiming at meeting human needs in a sustainable manner. The analysis and concept research approach presented in this paper offer a comprehensive understanding of existing solutions and promote innovative ideas in the field of sustainable WEF nexus. The newly developed 11-dimensional canvas tool shows great potential as a research and strategic tool in this field.

Coordination of the Industrial-Ecological Economy in the Yangtze River Economic Belt, China

Liang Yuan et al.

Summary: The Yangtze River Economic Belt is an important growth pole of China's economy, but it also faces severe environmental pollution. This paper analyzes the coordination degree of the industrial-ecological economy in the YREB and identifies important influencing factors. The study finds that the midstream area has a high level of coordination, while other areas show varying degrees of symbiotic or inhibitory relationships. Furthermore, the industrial ecosystem is found to be the largest factor affecting coordination.

The Relationship between Coordination Degree of the Water-Energy-Food System and Regional Economic Development

Shasha Xu et al.

Summary: The study shows that in regions with low coordination degree, improving the coordination degree of the WEF system will hinder regional economic growth, while in regions with high coordination degree, it will promote regional economic growth. Furthermore, the study also found a lag period for the influence of improved coordination degree on regional economic growth.

Evaluation and Scenario Prediction of the Water-Energy-Food System Security in the Yangtze River Economic Belt Based on the RF-Haken Model

Yan Chen et al.

Summary: The level of water-energy-food security in the Yangtze River Economic Belt improved significantly from 2008 to 2017, with different provinces performing differently in different subsystems. According to the scenario prediction results for Jiangsu Province and Hubei Province in 2025, implementing moderate management in accordance with current management objectives can increase the overall security of the system to level 4.
