Estimation of Dry-Season Fluctuation in Specific Yield using Water Budgeting Approach in Bonasuria Micro-watershed of Damodar River Basin, India

Sanjib Chakraborty et al.

Summary: This study investigates the temporal variation of specific yield (S-y) based on monthly ground water budgeting in Bonasuria micro-watershed of the Damodar river-basin in India. The results show that the specific yield values gradually change with the progression of summer months, indicating a low water storage capacity of the shallow aquifer system. The study suggests that efficient water management, such as storing seepage as base flow and constructing appropriate water storage structures, can rejuvenate the aquifer system and promote sustainable dry-season agricultural practices in the area.

Nitrogen nutrition and fertilization of onions (Allium cepa L.)-A literature review

Daniel Geisseler et al.

Summary: Nitrogen is essential for onion growth, with demand varying based on yield and local nitrogen sources. Efficient nitrogen management practices include slow-release fertilizers, split applications, and band application to improve nitrogen use efficiency. Increased nitrogen availability can enhance bulb size, but excess nitrogen may lead to storage issues like decay.

Vertical distribution and seasonal variation of soil moisture after drip-irrigation affects greenhouse gas emissions and maize production during the growth season

Jia Gao et al.

Summary: This study reveals the complex relationship between different soil moisture levels on greenhouse gas emissions and maize yield. While increasing soil moisture can enhance maize yield, it also leads to increased greenhouse gas emissions, highlighting the importance of adjusting irrigation methods and frequency to achieve higher resource use efficiency.

Wheat and maize-derived water-washed and unwashed biochar improved the nutrients phytoavailability and the grain and straw yield of rice and wheat: A field trial for sustainable management of paddy soils

Punhoon Khan Korai et al.

Summary: The study found that adding biochar, especially wheat raw biochar, significantly increased rice yield and the availability and content of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium in plants. Additionally, the availability and content of iron, manganese, zinc, and copper in rice and wheat grains and straw also significantly increased. However, the water-washing process altered the properties of biochar, particularly the water-extractable carbon, decreasing its efficiency.

Assessment of smallholder farmers? demand for and adoption constraints to small-scale irrigation technologies: Evidence from Ethiopia

Meneyahel Z. Tesfaye et al.

Summary: Research shows that the demand for agricultural water lifting technologies among smallholder farmers is constrained by lack of access to financing options. They prefer motorized pumps due to their efficiency and labor-saving benefits. By improving access to finance and technical support, the adoption of more efficient irrigation technologies by smallholders can be promoted, leading to improved productivity.

Strategies to improve the environmental efficiency and the profitability of sugarcane mills

Felipe Goncalves et al.

Summary: The Brazilian sugarcane industry has been significant since colonial times, with over 350 sugarcane mills across the country responsible for job creation and valuable products. Government incentives, such as the RenovaBio program, aim to boost ethanol production and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, while also creating new economic opportunities such as the decarbonization credit (CBio). Improving process efficiency in production steps can lead to increased profits and positive environmental impacts.

Influencing factors of farmers' adoption of pro-environmental agricultural technologies in China: Meta-analysis

Hualin Xie et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the adoption behavior of farmers towards pro-environmental agricultural technology through meta-analysis, finding that influencing factors are not completely homogeneous. Age, income, and land transfer have significant impacts on adoption, while factors like household size and village cadres have minimal influence. Policy design should consider various factors such as geographical differences, farmer needs, and costs.

Impact of particle size reduction on high gravity enzymatic hydrolysis of steam-exploded wheat straw

Luis Hoppert et al.

Summary: This study focused on enzymatic hydrolysis of solid loadings from 10-35% dry matter with steam-exploded wheat straw in different particle sizes. The results showed that small particle sizes <= 2.5mm led to increased final glucose concentrations and improved slurry viscosity and miscibility. High gravity enzymatic hydrolysis with solid loadings of 30-35% dry matter using small particle size wheat straw resulted in the highest final glucose yield.

Surface water runoff response to forest management: Low-intensity forest restoration does not increase surface water yields

Jake R. Kurzweil et al.

Summary: Ecohydrology in the Western United States is impacted by declining snowpack and increasing forest fires. Research shows that forest fires and clearcut logging can increase surface water runoff, but climatic factors may outweigh the anticipated effects of forest restoration treatments on increasing surface water runoff.

Smallholder Coffee Productivity as Affected by Socioeconomic Factors and Technology Adoption

Daniel M. Wambua et al.

Summary: The study found that off-farm income, access to credit, type of land tenure, and land size had significant positive effects on coffee productivity. Therefore, coffee farmers should diversify their income sources, embrace credit financing, and the government should review land use policies to provide adequate agricultural land. Additionally, the adoption of recommended application rates of manure, fungicides, and pesticides had significant positive effects on coffee productivity, indicating the importance of enhancing the adoption of these technologies among small-scale farmers.
