Characteristics of inorganic and organic phosphorus in Lake Sha sediments from a semiarid region, Northwest China: Sources and bioavailability

Huihui Ma et al.

Summary: Phosphorus (P) is a key limiting nutrient in lake ecosystems and cyanobacterial blooms. This study investigated the sources and bioavailability of organic and inorganic phosphorus (P-i and P-o) in the sediments of Lake Sha, China. The findings showed that organic matter in the sediments primarily originated from aquatic plants, bacteria, algae, and terrestrial plants, with particulate matter from terrestrial plants being an important source of phosphorus. The dominant form of phosphorus in the sediments was calcium-bonded phosphorus (Ca-P), which had low bioavailability. The distribution of Phragmites australis in the lake could lead to the transformation of Ca-P to bioavailable phosphorus. Analysis of the chemical composition revealed that bioavailable phosphorus in the overlying water mainly came from rapidly degrading diester P and labile monoester P in the sediments. Particulate matter from the Yellow River was identified as an important source of bioavailable P-i and P-o in Lake Sha.

Summary: This study investigated the retention of particulate phosphorus and dissolved total phosphorus in a typical river-transition-reservoir system in Southwest China during different water seasons. The results showed that the reservoir effectively retained both particulate phosphorus and dissolved total phosphorus. Long-term observations revealed a high retention rate of bioavailable phosphorus in sediments.
