Multi-Scale Imaging of Vascular Pathologies in Cardiovascular Disease

Ashish Tiwari et al.

Summary: Cardiovascular diseases cause systemic changes in the blood vessels, particularly in the endothelial cells that line them. Inflammation triggers adjustments in endothelial cells, leading to changes in blood flow and permeability, expression of adhesion molecules, vessel wall inflammation, thrombosis, angiogenic processes, and extracellular matrix production. Advancements in imaging techniques have allowed for preclinical multi-scale imaging of these endothelial changes, providing insights into vascular biology and potential diagnostic applications in managing cardiovascular diseases.

Multispectral Optoacoustic Tomography for Functional Imaging in Vascular Research

Tiago Granja et al.

Summary: Microcirculatory impairment is an important theme in vascular research. The development of live imaging systems, including optoacoustic tomography (OT), has provided new opportunities for real-time, quantifiable functional imaging. OT combines optical absorption and spatial resolution capacities with tissue depth, and shows great potential in functional imaging.

Measurement of muscle blood flow and O2 uptake via near-infrared spectroscopy using a novel occlusion protocol

Joshua J. Dennis et al.

Summary: The study presents a novel protocol that combines venous and arterial occlusions to determine muscle blood flow and O2 uptake during handgrip exercise from a single measurement point using near-infrared spectroscopy. Results show that the COMBO method provides valid estimates of (Q)(FDS) and (V) over dotO(2FDS) at rest and during static handgrip exercise up to 60%MVC, with a tendency to slightly underestimate (V) over dotO(2FDS) by up to 7%.

The Association Between Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound and Near-Infrared Spectroscopy-Derived Measures of Calf Muscle Microvascular Responsiveness in Older Adults

Grace M. Young et al.

Summary: The study found strong correlations and level of agreement between CEUS and NIRS-derived measures of post-occlusion skeletal muscle microvascular responsiveness in older adults. This suggests that NIRS can serve as a non-invasive, portable, and cost-effective method for assessing post-occlusion skeletal muscle microvascular responsiveness in older adults.
