Plant responses to heterogeneous salinity: agronomic relevance and research priorities

Francisco Jose Valenzuela et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the importance of studying soil salinity heterogeneity and recent research progress on plant responses to heterogeneous root-zone salinity and nutrient conditions. The focus is on how plants can optimize the use of less-saline patches within the root-zone to enhance growth.

Growth, Leaf Morphological and Physiological Adaptability of Leaf Beet (Beta vulgaris var. cicla) to Salt Stress: A Soil Culture Experiment

Hua He et al.

Summary: Leaf beet showed a certain tolerance to 0.7% NaCl salinity, adapting to salt stress by reducing plant height, delaying leaf generation, decreasing leaf area, changing leaf shape, maintaining high chlorophyll content, and increasing LMA, tissue density, and succulence.

Salinity Tolerance, Ion Accumulation Potential and Osmotic Adjustment In Vitro and In Planta of Different Armeria maritima Accessions from a Dry Coastal Meadow

Liva Purmale et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to compare the tolerance to salinity and ion accumulation potential of Armeria maritima subsp. elongata. Significant differences were found in morphology and responses to salinity between different accessions. The biomass accumulation in above-ground parts of soil-grown plants was relatively unaffected by salinity. Differences in ion accumulation were observed between accessions and cultivation systems. A wide salinity tolerance exists within A. maritima accessions, associated with the ability to accumulate surplus ions in salt glands and old leaves.

Growth and Mineral Relations of Beta vulgaris var. cicla and Beta vulgaris ssp. maritima Cultivated Hydroponically with Diluted Seawater and Low Nitrogen Level in the Nutrient Solution

Martina Puccinelli et al.

Summary: There is a growing interest in using seawater in horticulture. This study found that Swiss chard and sea beet are potential crop species for seawater hydroponics or aquaponics. Increasing salinity or reducing nitrogen levels in the nutrient solution resulted in lower crop yield and biomass in both species.

Leaf sodium, potassium and electrolyte accumulation capacity of plant species from salt-affected coastal habitats of the Baltic Sea: Towards a definition of Na hyperaccumulation

Gederts Ievinsh et al.

Summary: The study aimed to compare the accumulation capacity of Na+ and K+ in native plant species from salt-affected coastal habitats, finding high variability in analyzed parameters. Three general groups of species were identified based on their accumulation characteristics, with approximate values of Na+ concentration in leaves established for coastal plant species of the Baltic Sea.

Response Mechanisms of Plants Under Saline-Alkali Stress

Shumei Fang et al.

Summary: Studies on plant resistance mechanisms under salt-alkali mixed stress are relatively scarce compared to those on salt stress alone. However, the synergistic effects of high concentrations of salt and high pH can be more harmful to plant growth, making it crucial to research plant response to saline-alkali stress for sustainable agricultural development.
