Study on the operation performance and floc adhesion mechanism of dissolved air flotation equipment

Yonglei Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the performance of air flotation equipment and its relationship with pollutant removal efficiency. The results showed that adjusting parameters such as dissolved gas pressure, air intake rate, and coagulant dosage could effectively improve equipment performance and significantly enhance pollutant removal. Microbubbles demonstrated good removal of high-molecular weight organic matter and the removal mechanism mainly relied on hydrophobic interactions with organic matter. The findings of this study are significant for the optimization and application of air flotation technology.

Membrane fouling performance of Fe-based coagulation-ultrafiltration process: Effect of sedimentation time

Yanyan Ding et al.

Summary: This study showed that both membrane fouling behavior and the performance of coagulation integrated UF processes can be influenced by both the density and thickness of a cake layer formed during the processes, as well as the sedimentation time and flocs characteristics. A critical threshold of 30 minutes was observed at the lab-scale, which determines whether direct coagulation-UF (CUF) outperforms conventional coagulation-sedimentation-UF (CSUF) depending on whether the main factor affecting membrane fouling is the cake layer density or thickness.

In-line coagulation assessment for ultrafiltration fouling reduction to treat secondary effluent for water reuse

Samia A. Aly et al.

Summary: In-line coagulation as pre-treatment to ultrafiltration (UF) improves UF performance and reduces membrane fouling. Different types and dosages of coagulants have varying effects on UF performance, with generally higher reduction of fouling achieved by increasing coagulant dosage. Ferric-based coagulants are better than aluminum-based coagulants for improving membrane performance.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of calcium ions and polyaluminum chloride on membrane fouling in the coagulation-ultrafiltration process, revealing synergistic effects between the two agents. By using density functional theory calculations and explaining the thermodynamic mechanisms, a theoretical explanation for such filtration behaviors was proposed.

Effects of micro-flocculation pretreatment on the ultrafiltration membrane fouling caused by different dissolved organic matters in treated wastewater

Lanxin Ren et al.

Summary: The study found that using micro-flocculation as a pretreatment approach can effectively reduce membrane fouling in UF caused by organic matters in treated wastewater. Micro-flocculation combined with UF process showed improved removal efficiency of organic matters, especially humic acid and sodium alginate. The results suggest that micro-flocculation pretreatment can effectively alleviate membrane fouling when treating wastewater containing humic acid, sodium alginate, or fulvic acid.

Retention of natural organic matter by ultrafiltration and the mitigation of membrane fouling through pre-treatment, membrane enhancement, and cleaning-A review

Christian D. Peters et al.

Summary: Natural organic matter (NOM) is a common issue in water treatment systems, which can be removed through early-stage membrane processes like ultrafiltration (UF) but may lead to UF membrane fouling. Recent studies have focused on enhancing NOM retention and mitigating membrane fouling in UF systems. Multi-process solutions are considered the most promising approach for addressing these challenges.

A comprehensive review of membrane fouling and cleaning methods with emphasis on ultrasound-assisted fouling control processes

Masoume Ehsani et al.

Summary: One of the key issues faced in membrane-based separation processes is the decline in permeate flux over time due to fouling. Ultrasonic irradiation is an environmentally friendly cleaning technique applied to prevent fouling formation or dislodge foulants on membrane surfaces. This article reviews different types of fouling, fouling evolution mechanisms, mathematical modeling, and strategies for fouling control, with a focus on ultrasound-assisted fouling control process as an innovative cleaning method. The effect of operational parameters on the performance of ultrasound-assisted filtration processes, challenges, highlights, and future outlook of ultrasound cleaning are discussed.
