Health risk assessment for human exposure to mercury species and arsenic via consumption of local food in a gold mining area in Colombia

Siday Marrugo-Madrid et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the risk to human health from consuming fruits, tubers, and fish contaminated with mercury and arsenic in a Colombian area affected by gold mining activities. The results showed that children and women of childbearing age had higher levels of methylmercury intake than the recommended safety limits. The intake of arsenic and mercury exceeded the safety levels for most population groups. There was also a potential risk of carcinogenicity from arsenic intake through food. Therefore, safety control mechanisms and environmental education strategies are crucial to protect the health of residents in areas impacted by gold mining activities.

Mercury distribution in different environmental matrices in aquatic systems of abandoned gold mines, Western Colombia: Focus on human health

Harry Gutierrez-Mosquera et al.

Summary: The study assessed total mercury (THg), methylmercury (MeHg) levels in various environmental compartments in abandoned gold mining ponds (AGMPs) and mining areas in Western Colombia to evaluate the present environmental conditions and human health risks. The findings indicate potential chronic effects due to elevated THg levels, particularly in fish, posing a threat to human health. Monitoring of mercury species in different compartments is recommended to mitigate environmental hazards in the region.

Mercury: What can we learn from the Amazon?

Maria Elena Crespo-Lopez et al.

Summary: Mercury is among the top ten most dangerous chemicals for public health worldwide, with increasing emissions particularly in South America, notably the Amazon region. Human populations in this area are highly exposed to methylmercury through contaminated fish consumption, with levels far exceeding those of other regions globally.

Summary: The study found a relationship between chronic exposure to mercury and cardiovascular diseases, including nonfatal ischemic heart disease and various causes of mortality, but not stroke. Different study types and exposure levels may affect the heterogeneity of study results. A hair mercury concentration of 2 μg/g was identified as a key point where cardiovascular disease risks start to increase.

Levels of Mercury, Methylmercury and Selenium in Fish: Insights into Children Food Safety

Grazia Barone et al.

Summary: The study measured total mercury and methylmercury concentrations in various commercially important fish species and assessed the potential risks associated with them for children's health. The results suggested that selenium could alleviate the potential toxicity of mercury to a certain extent, and it was recommended that children should consume fish in moderation, especially swordfish and tunas.

Methylmercury in Fish from the Amazon Region-a Review Focused on Eating Habits

Thais Casarin Gimenes et al.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review on MeHg levels in Amazon fishes by their eating habits, finding that carnivore/piscivore fishes had the highest MeHg concentrations, while herbivore fish had the lowest. Women had higher estimated weekly intake (EWI) and provisional tolerable weekly intake (PTWI) indexes. Consuming fish in the region poses a MeHg risk, especially in carnivorous/piscivorous fish, which may lead to serious health issues for the Amazon population.

Impacts of the Goldmining and Chronic Methylmercury Exposure on the Good-Living and Mental Health of Munduruku Native Communities in the Amazon Basin

Rafaela Waddington Achatz et al.

Summary: This paper explores the impact of illegal goldmining on Munduruku communities' Good-Living and investigates the potential link between chronic methylmercury exposure and deteriorating mental health conditions in the Brazilian Amazon. The study found high levels of mercury exposure in the participants' hair samples, with a tendency for worse mental health indicators in individuals with higher methylmercury exposure levels. Despite limitations in the study, qualitative findings suggest a clear association between goldmining impacts and the Munduruku people's decreasing autonomy in maintaining their Good-Living, emphasizing the need for further research.

Mercury concentrations in fish and human health assessment in preflood phase of a hydro dam in Teles Pires River, Southern Brazilian Amazon

Liliane Stedile de Matos et al.

Summary: This study estimated the concentration of MeHg based on the total mercury concentration in muscles of three species of carnivorous fish and calculated the human health risk related to MeHg contamination caused by fish consumption. The results suggested that people from the Teles Pires River area might be facing adverse health effects due to mercury exposure through fish consumption. Further studies involving more fish specimens and considering biological factors are needed to fully understand the health risks.
