Concentrations, spatial distribution, sources and environmental health risks of potentially toxic elements in urban road dust across China

Siyu Wang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that PTE pollution in road dust is prevalent across China, with levels generally higher in eastern cities than western cities. The main driving factors are socioeconomic, contributing to ecological and human health risks, particularly in southeastern coastal areas and the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. Regions in western China may have potential noncarcinogenic risk from Cd and Pb, necessitating monitoring and control measures.

Barium in coal and coal combustion products: Distribution, enrichment and migration

Huidi Hao et al.

Summary: Coal combustion releases cobalt, which can pose harm to the environment and human health, making it crucial to control cobalt emissions. Studies have shown that cobalt is extremely enriched in coal in some areas of China, particularly in Jurassic coal seams, with various occurrences including minerals and organic matter combinations.

Summary: This study found the presence of arsenic and lead in groundwater in Ban Khai District, with arsenic appearing as a hot spot in some areas during the wet season possibly due to human activity contamination. The concentration of lead did not exceed WHO guidelines, indicating a background concentration. Most of the wells were in an oxidation state, supporting arsenic mobility.

Identifying sources and transport routes of heavy metals in soil with different land uses around a smelting site by GIS based PCA and PMF

Richmond Anaman et al.

Summary: This study successfully identified the sources, transport routes, and apportionment of heavy metals in soil around a smelting site using principal component analysis, positive matrix factorization, and geographic information system mapping. The results showed that the soil was contaminated with various heavy metals, with smelter emissions and soil parent materials being the primary sources. GIS visualization revealed that surface runoff and atmospheric deposition were the main transport routes for the heavy metals, with different land uses receiving varying degrees of contamination.

Source apportionment of urban road dust using four multivariate receptor models

Jithin Jose et al.

Summary: Road dust is a significant contributor to airborne particulate matter in urban regions, and multivariate receptor models are crucial for identifying and mitigating its sources. This study in Vellore City, India found that crustal material and resuspended road dust are the main contributors to road dust, with additional sources like brake wear, tire wear, biomass combustion, vehicular emission, and industrial sources also identified. The Unmix model was determined to be the ideal receptor model for this dataset, providing critical information for future policy and regulation development.

Summary: The study found significant mercury contamination in the soil and road dust samples from the Sonbhadra region, while arsenic contamination was found to be moderate. The assessment of potential toxic elements' risks for adults and children showed values below the safe threshold, except for iron in the ingestion pathway for children.

Specific sources of health risks induced by metallic elements in PM2.5 during the wintertime in Beijing, China

Mei-Yi Fan et al.

Summary: This study found that metallic elements in PM2.5, although a minor fraction, still posed a threat to human health, especially for children. Arsenic (As) was the major contributing element to non-cancer risk for children, while nickel (Ni) and manganese (Mn) were the major contributing species to non-cancer risk for adults.

Spatial-temporal characteristics, source-specific variation and uncertainty analysis of health risks associated with heavy metals in road dust in Beijing, China

Cong Men et al.

Summary: This study systematically analyzed the levels and main sources of health risks associated with ten heavy metals in road dust samples collected from Beijing. It found that Cr and Ni posed cautionary carcinogenic risks to children, while fuel combustion posed cautionary risks in all seasons. Heavy metal concentrations, ingestion rate, and skin adherence factor were the most influential variables for uncertainties in health risk assessment.

Quantification and Characterization of Metals in Ultrafine Road Dust Particles

Suzanne Beauchemin et al.

Summary: This study investigated metal concentrations in ultrafine particle fraction (UFP) isolated from road dust in Toronto, Canada. Results showed marked enrichment of Cd, Cr, Zn, and V concentrations in UFP compared to the dust box material. UFP from arterial roads contained higher concentrations of Cd, Zn, and V compared to UFP from local roads, and the elevated concentrations of transition metals in UFP could potentially cause oxidative stress in lung cells, posing a human health concern.

Estimation of Soil and Dust Ingestion Rates from the Stochastic Human Exposure and Dose Simulation Soil and Dust Model for Children in Taiwan

Ying-Lin Wang et al.

Summary: This study focused on estimating the probabilistic soil and dust ingestion rates for children under 3 years old using the SHEDS-S/D model and assessing the health risks of exposure to heavy metals. It found that soil-to-skin adherence and hand-to-mouth ingestion were the main factors influencing ingestion rates. The results highlight the importance of soil ingestion rate as a key parameter increasing the risk for children, with potential risk reduction through increased hand washing.

Association between PM10 and specific circulatory system diseases in China

Yifan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study in Beijing found that PM10 has a significant short-term impact on emergency room visits for total circulatory system diseases as well as specific diseases such as arrhythmia, cerebrovascular diseases, high blood pressure, and ischemic heart disease. The addition of NO2 or SO2 to the model resulted in a weakening of the effect estimates of PM10, while the addition of PM2.5 mostly increased the effect estimates of PM10. The study also found that PM10 had a greater effect on males and the elderly.
