Bongeka Cassandra Mkhize et al.

Summary: The study found that diet-induced prediabetes leads to increased RAAS activity in multiple organs, accompanied by elevated nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate oxidase and reduced superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase 1 concentrations, as well as increased hepatic triglycerides.

Barker Hypothesis and Hypertension

Summary: Early onset hypertension is a major medical disorder that has emerged in both developing and developed countries in the current millennium. Low birth weight has been associated with hypertension, possibly due to foetal onset adult disease and the impact of low nephron mass.

Summary: Common variants in the FADS2 and ELOVL2 genes were associated with BMI in a large population of obese Italian children. These SNPs were associated with alterations in LC-PUFAs homeostasis, not accompanied by modifications of plasma lipids or HOMA-IR.

Metabolomic Profiling of Aqueous Humor and Plasma in Primary Open Angle Glaucoma Patients Points Towards Novel Diagnostic and Therapeutic Strategy

Yizhen Tang et al.

Summary: Glaucoma, characterized by loss of retinal ganglion cells, is a leading cause of blindness globally. Primary open angle glaucoma (POAG), the most common type, lacks effective therapy beyond reducing intraocular pressure. Metabolomics may provide new insights in understanding this condition and identifying potential biomarkers.

The toxic side of one-carbon metabolism and epigenetics

Agustin E. Morellato et al.

Summary: One-carbon metabolism is a crucial metabolic hub for providing one-carbon units for biosynthesis and epigenetic modifications. The central role in this hub is played by tetrahydrofolate (THF), which generates one-carbon THF intermediates through the folate or one-carbon cycle. THF derivatives feed one-carbon units into purine and thymidine synthesis, as well as the methionine cycle for AdoMet production.

The Role of Cellular Stress in Intrauterine Growth Restriction and Postnatal Dysmetabolism

Shelby L. Oke et al.

Summary: Disruption of the in utero environment can have detrimental effects on fetal growth and development, leading to intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) which affects birth weight and organ function. The developmental origins of health and disease (DOHaD) theory suggests that IUGR has long-term consequences on offspring health, with a negative correlation between birth weight and metabolic health. Animal studies have been crucial in elucidating the molecular mechanisms underlying these relationships, particularly the role of cellular stress in metabolic syndrome and programmed cell death in IUGR offspring's metabolic organs.

Identifying Risk Factors for Low Piglet Birth Weight, High Within-Litter Variation and Occurrence of Intrauterine Growth-Restricted Piglets in Hyperprolific Sows

Kristina Riddersholm et al.

Summary: Piglet mortality is a concern in pig production worldwide. Factors such as low piglet birth weight (PBW), intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), and high variation in PBW within litters (CVPBW) increase the risk of piglet death. Different gestating sow feeding systems, like free-access stalls, floor feeding, and electronic sow feeding, have varying effects on fetal development. Increasing litter size was identified as the most critical risk factor affecting PBW, CVPBW, and the occurrence of IUGR piglets in this study.
