Exploring the spatial heterogeneity of urban heat island effect and its relationship to block morphology with the geographically weighted regression model

Yuejing Gao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between urban morphology and the urban heat island (UHI) effect at the block level using geographically weighted regression (GWR) models. The results showed significant spatial variations of different variables, with impervious surface ratio (ISR) and building density (BD) intensifying the UHI effect while green ratio (GR) forming a cool urban island in dense urban areas. The findings suggest that morphological variables significantly impact the UHI effect, emphasizing the importance of considering spatial context in sustainable urban planning.

Spatial modeling of migration using GIS-based multi-criteria decision analysis: A case study of Iran

Naeim Mijani et al.

Summary: Spatial modeling of migration and identification of effective parameters are crucial for planning and managing demographic, economic, social, and environmental changes on various geographical scales. The study proposes a new approach for modeling migration patterns in Iran using multi-criteria decision analysis, resulting in migration potential maps. Findings reveal heterogeneous migration potential across Iranian provinces, with the model performing relatively well in producing migration spatial potential maps.

Summary: This study proposes an approach for assessing the social resilience of citizens using a locative multi-criteria decision-making model, and maps the social resilience of Sarpol-e Zahab city in Iran. The results indicate that over 60% of the study area falls into the low social resilience category, highlighting the need for prioritizing resources and efforts.

Impacts of land use/ land cover types on interactions between urban heat island effects and heat waves

Zhendong Zou et al.

Summary: The study showed that the urban heat island effect is significantly amplified during heat waves, with different land use types in urban areas playing a significant role in this interaction. Increasing natural surface coverage can mitigate the intensity and warming potential of the UHI effect, attributed to increased latent heat consumption by vegetation during heat waves.

The relationship between urban heat island and air pollutants and them with influencing factors in the Yangtze River Delta, China

Yuanyuan Wang et al.

Summary: The study found a complex relationship between urban heat island effect and air pollution in the Yangtze River Delta region, with air pollution being more severe in inland cities compared to coastal cities. Land surface temperature is one of the key factors influencing urban heat island effect and air pollution.

Early warnings and emerging accountability: Total's responses to global warming, 1971-2021

Christophe Bonneuil et al.

Summary: The study reveals that Total was warned about the potential for global warming from its products as early as 1971, and began promoting doubt regarding the scientific basis for global warming in the late 1980s before ultimately accepting climate science publicly in the late 1990s while pushing for policy delay. Exxon, through IPIECA, coordinated an international campaign to dispute climate science and weaken international climate policy starting in the 1980s.

Diurnal and seasonal trends and associated determinants of surface urban heat islands in large Bangladesh cities

Ashraf Dewan et al.

Summary: This study focused on the intensity of surface urban heat island (SUHI) in five major cities in Bangladesh and found that factors such as dense city population, a high degree of imperviousness, and the absence of greenery may contribute to urban warming. The findings of this study will help in developing effective local-scale climate change adaptation plans for the projected substantial increase in urban population in Bangladesh in the future.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the local warming trend and driving factors in the natural subregions of Alberta using a remote-sensing approach. The results showed that May was the month with the most significant warming trends in most subregions during 2001-2020, while the Grassland and Parkland subregions exhibited a cooling trend during the daytime in the summer.

The influence of urban form on surface urban heat island and its planning implications: Evidence from 1288 urban clusters in China

Huimin Liu et al.

Summary: There is a growing demand for urban form optimization to mitigate urban heat island (UHI) effect. Nevertheless, how UHI responds to various urban morphological patterns is still limitedly understood, especially for cities in developing countries. This study based on 1288 urban clusters in China explores the relationship between urban form and surface UHI (SUHI), finding centrality to be a dominant factor in nighttime SUHI, with relationships varying across climate zones and being size-dependent.

Surface urban heat island intensity in five major cities of Bangladesh: Patterns, drivers and trends

Ashraf Dewan et al.

Summary: The research investigated the spatiotemporal variation of SUHII in major cities of Bangladesh, finding that larger cities have higher SUHII, with daytime SUHII greater than nighttime. Factors such as population, lack of greenery, and anthropogenic forcing play significant roles in influencing SUHII, with varying trends observed in urban development.

An Alternative Method for the Generation of Consistent Mapping to Monitoring Land Cover Change: A Case Study of Guerrero State in Mexico

Rene Vazquez-Jimenez et al.

Summary: This study proposes an alternative method for generating consistent Land Use/Land Cover (LULC) maps using supervised classification techniques applied to identified dynamics zones. The methodology uses Landsat images from 2011 and 2016 with various correction models and indices to achieve accurate and robust LULC mapping. The results show that the proposed method is viable, fully automatable, and visually superior to conventional methods.
