Multimorbidity and Polypharmacy in Chinese Emergency Department Patients With Atrial Fibrillation and Impacts on Clinical Outcomes

Juan Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of multimorbidity, polypharmacy, and treatment strategies on outcomes in Chinese emergency department atrial fibrillation (AF) patients. The results showed that multimorbidity was associated with worse outcomes, while polypharmacy had no significant effect. Coronary artery disease and antiplatelet therapy were identified as independent risk factors for VKA non-use in patients with multimorbidity.

Consumer Attitudes Towards Deprescribing: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Kristie Rebecca Weir et al.

Summary: Harmful and unnecessary medication use in older adults is common, indicating a lack of deprescribing. This study aimed to understand patients' attitudes towards deprescribing through the analysis of the PATD questionnaire and its variations. The findings showed that the majority of participants were willing to stop taking medication, which could potentially increase the adoption of deprescribing recommendations in clinical practice.

Prevalence of potentially inappropriate medications based on the STOPPFrail criteria in frail older patients with limited life expectancy: a cross-sectional study

Hyun-Woo Chae et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) based on the STOPPFrail criteria (STOPPFrail-PIM) in frail older adults with limited life expectancy. The results showed that most patients had at least one STOPPFrail-PIM at admission, but the rate of STOPPFrail-PIM decreased significantly at discharge after receiving geriatric multidisciplinary team care.

Prevalence of multimorbidity and its correlates among older adults in Eastern Nepal

Siva Balakrishnan et al.

Summary: The study revealed a prevalence of multimorbidity among older adults in Eastern Nepal, with hypertension, osteoarthritis, and chronic respiratory disease being the common conditions. Factors associated with multimorbidity included increased age, being without a partner, residing in urban areas, and being distant from health centers.

Impact of Multimorbidity and Polypharmacy on Clinical Outcomes of Elderly Chinese Patients with Atrial Fibrillation

Agnieszka Kotalczyk et al.

Summary: Multimorbidity and polypharmacy are common among elderly Chinese patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), and multimorbidity is an independent predictor of adverse clinical outcomes. The use of oral anticoagulants (OAC) is safe and significantly improves survival in AF patients with multimorbidity and polypharmacy.

Association between comorbidities and left and right atrial dysfunction in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation: Analysis of AF-RISK

Manouk J. W. van Mourik et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between comorbidities and left atrial and right atrial function in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. The results showed that a higher number of comorbidities were related to a decrease in left atrial strain and conduit strain, independent of left atrial volume. Patients with fewer comorbidities showed a progression of impaired atrial function during one year of follow-up. The study emphasizes the importance of comorbidity management in preventing or reversing the decrease in atrial function.

Inappropriate Prescriptions in Older People-Translation and Adaptation to Portuguese of the STOPP/START Screening Tool

Luis Monteiro et al.

Summary: Inappropriate prescribing is a common problem for older people, but the STOPP/START tool can help identify and reduce the occurrence of potentially inappropriate medications and prescribing omissions. This study translated and validated the tool for use by Portuguese physicians, finding that it improved the management of medications for elderly patients and provided a reliable and easy-to-use screening tool.

Summary: This study examines changes in medication-use patterns and polypharmacy among older adults in Israeli community over a decade. It found that although polypharmacy has decreased, there is still a need for continuous attention, especially concerning lack of knowledge of indications.

Trends in polypharmacy and potentially inappropriate medication (PIM) in older and middle-aged people treated for diabetes

Monika Pury Oktora et al.

Summary: The study found that polypharmacy increased significantly in older and middle-aged people with diabetes between 2012 and 2016, with a decrease in the prevalence of potentially inappropriate medication use in patients aged 65 and older, but an increase in those aged 45-64. Common potentially inappropriate medications included long-term high-dose proton pump inhibitors, benzodiazepines, and strong opioids.

Prevalence/incidence of atrial fibrillation based on integrated medical/pharmacy claims, and association with co-morbidity profiles/multi-morbidity in a large US adult cohort

Gregory Y. H. Lip et al.

Summary: The study analyzed AF prevalence/incidence and comorbidity profiles in a large US adult cohort using integrated medical/pharmacy claims data. AF prevalence was found to be under-estimated in the elderly population and over-estimated in the younger population based on integrated criteria. Multi-morbidity is common among AF patients, affecting approximately 1 in 10 patients.

Exploring Patients' Attitudes Toward Deprescribing and Their Perception of Pharmacist Involvement in a European Country: A Cross-Sectional Study

Iva Buzancic et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated a positive attitude towards deprescribing among adults aged 40 and above, with a willingness to involve pharmacists in the process. Factors such as low concerns about stopping medication, low appropriateness scores, and positive opinions on pharmacist involvement were associated with a positive attitude towards deprescribing. These results support the transition towards a patient-centered care and shared-decision making model.
