Multimorbidity, polypharmacy and inappropriate prescribing in elderly patients with atrial fibrillation: A report from the China Atrial Fibrillation Registry Study

Multimorbidity and Polypharmacy in Chinese Emergency Department Patients With Atrial Fibrillation and Impacts on Clinical Outcomes

Summary: This study investigated the impact of multimorbidity, polypharmacy, and treatment strategies on outcomes in Chinese emergency department atrial fibrillation (AF) patients. The results showed that multimorbidity was associated with worse outcomes, while polypharmacy had no significant effect. Coronary artery disease and antiplatelet therapy were identified as independent risk factors for VKA non-use in patients with multimorbidity.

Consumer Attitudes Towards Deprescribing: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Summary: Harmful and unnecessary medication use in older adults is common, indicating a lack of deprescribing. This study aimed to understand patients' attitudes towards deprescribing through the analysis of the PATD questionnaire and its variations. The findings showed that the majority of participants were willing to stop taking medication, which could potentially increase the adoption of deprescribing recommendations in clinical practice.

Prevalence of potentially inappropriate medications based on the STOPPFrail criteria in frail older patients with limited life expectancy: a cross-sectional study

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) based on the STOPPFrail criteria (STOPPFrail-PIM) in frail older adults with limited life expectancy. The results showed that most patients had at least one STOPPFrail-PIM at admission, but the rate of STOPPFrail-PIM decreased significantly at discharge after receiving geriatric multidisciplinary team care.

Prevalence of multimorbidity and its correlates among older adults in Eastern Nepal

Polypill for cardiovascular disease prevention: Systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Association between comorbidities and left and right atrial dysfunction in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation: Analysis of AF-RISK

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between comorbidities and left atrial and right atrial function in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. The results showed that a higher number of comorbidities were related to a decrease in left atrial strain and conduit strain, independent of left atrial volume. Patients with fewer comorbidities showed a progression of impaired atrial function during one year of follow-up. The study emphasizes the importance of comorbidity management in preventing or reversing the decrease in atrial function.

Inappropriate Prescriptions in Older People-Translation and Adaptation to Portuguese of the STOPP/START Screening Tool

Summary: Inappropriate prescribing is a common problem for older people, but the STOPP/START tool can help identify and reduce the occurrence of potentially inappropriate medications and prescribing omissions. Trends in polypharmacy and potentially inappropriate medication (PIM) in older and middle-aged people treated for diabetes
