Mechanisms of Discontinuous Permafrost Thaw in Peatlands

Elise G. Devoie et al.

Summary: The study found that in discontinuous permafrost peatlands, thaw rates are faster compared to other regions, and vertical heat conduction and advective heat transfer play crucial roles in the thawing process. Additionally, geothermal gradient and groundwater flow may also contribute to permafrost thaw. Analyzing the functions of taliks in different landscapes can provide insights into the subsurface permafrost structure.

Permafrost dynamics and their hydrologic impacts over the Russian Arctic drainage basin

Wang Kang et al.

Summary: Permafrost plays a critical role in hydrological processes in the Arctic drainage basin, with historical increases in soil temperature and active layer volume potentially leading to changes in runoff patterns. The study found significant correlations between freeze season runoff and active layer thickness in certain basins, indicating the importance of permafrost conditions in influencing winter runoff.

Thermal effect of thermokarst lake on the permafrost under embankment

Summary: In permafrost regions of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the thermal effect of thermokarst lakes on permafrost under road embankments has been studied. It was found that thermokarst lakes can transfer heat to permafrost, causing degradation and melting of the soil under the embankment.
